Flying from Lusaka
Approximately 16 miles from the centre of Lusaka is Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. This bright, modern airport serves the whole of Zambia and acts as an entry and departure point for the thousands of tourists. Passengers flying from Lusaka with Qatar Airways will find this efficient airport to be a great starting point for any journey, and a hassle-free way to connect to the major international air hubs around the world.
Transportation and parking
The easiest way to get to and from the airport is to pre-book a taxi through your hotel reception or concierge service. It is not advisable to hail a taxi from the kerb, as there are unlicensed taxis working in Lusaka. Agree the fare before the start of your journey. Buses do run to the airport, but they tend to be somewhat sporadic and full, making them unsuitable for travellers carrying a large amount of luggage.
Driving to the airport is relatively simple; just follow the Great East Road northeast of the capital and look for the signs for the slip-road leading to the airport, where you will find branches for most major car hire companies to drop off your car (depending on your arrangement).
At the airport
Passengers flying from Lusaka with Qatar Airways depart from the main terminal’s Departure area. The airport can handle up to two million passengers a year, but apart from peak travel times it is relatively quiet. This makes check-in and security checks quick and easy, so allow around an hour before your flight is due to depart to check-in and go through customs. Be aware that although smooth, security checks are rigorous so ensure all your paperwork is in order before you arrive.
Facilities and amenities
Facilities are limited at the airport, although it does meet most traveller’s needs. A restaurant serves a variety of local and international cuisine, and there are coffee stands and vendors for on-the-go snacks and beverages. A few shops offer trinkets, travel essentials and souvenirs, although they can be a little pricey. ATMs and currency exchange facilities are available, and Wi-Fi is available in the VIP lounge and in certain parts of the main waiting area.
