Berlin: History with a contemporary twist

Book your visit to Berlin

Berlin, a place where every corner tells a story. From the cobblestone streets echoing footsteps of the past, to the colourful graffiti murals shouting the voices of today. It’s a blend of cultures, with a creative energy that influences everyone who visits. Dive into hip neighbourhoods with arty districts filled with unique shops and independent galleries. Socialise with friendly locals in lively outdoor spaces and enjoy the comforting aromas of Berlin’s delicacies.

Berlin isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience – a living tapestry of stories waiting to be discovered. Pack your curiosity and come see what adventures await in this captivating city.

Things to do in Berlin

One must experience the iconic piece of history that is the Berlin Wall. Start at the Visitor Centre to understand its history and significance, then venture to admire the wall's remnants. The largest section of the wall runs for just under one and a half kilometres, now named the East Side Gallery. It’s been painted by 118 international artists, creating the longest open-air gallery in the world.

Head over to Brandenburg Gate, another portal to Berlin’s storied past. Then, take a breather at the Berlin Cathedral. For a monumental Berlin city view, climb the spiral staircase in the futuristic glass dome of the Reichstag Building – an architectural marvel that is far from just a regular government building.

For something a little different, head to the Berlin Story Bunker. A bit like Berlin itself, this underground museum is gritty, intriguing and packed with interesting facts.

Activities in Berlin

Explore the heart of Berlin’s cultural scene at Museum Island, where five museums await you. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this museum complex showcases all sorts of exhibitions from art and cultural, to historical and archeological.

After museum-hopping, make your way to Tiergarten Park. The lush park is idyllic for leisurely strolls and picnics, or you can rent a bike if you’re feeling active.

Ready for a thrill? The Berlin Dungeon is a spine-tingling adventure you can’t miss. This immersive attraction with live actors uncovers Berlin’s history in the most entertaining way possible.

If you’re visiting with family, Zoo Berlin is a hit with all ages. Dating back to 1844, this zoo has evolved over the years as the home to a huge variety of species – a must-see for animal enthusiasts.

Food in Berlin

One of the best parts about Berlin is dining outdoors – it’s the quintessential Berlin thing to do. While you’re there, sink your teeth into currywurst. This popular sausage dish is smothered in a tangy, curry ketchup sauce. Much like this, meals in Berlin are typically of the hearty kind, such as Königsberger Klopse – a bowl of meatballs in a creamy, caper sauce.

Treat your taste buds to a late-night street food snack. The doner kebab (bread wrapped around sliced meats and vegetables, drizzled with creamy sauces) is quite a hit with the locals.

For a taste of the market halls, Markthalle Neun is a favourite – abundant with everything from artisanal cheeses to exotic spices. Don’t miss Street Food Thursday where you can sample food from all over the world.

Shopping in Berlin

Shopping in Berlin is a journey through the eras. Charlottenburg Palace becomes lively with market stalls every December and should not be missed. Once a royal residence, these magnificent grounds transform into a winter wonderland, with twinkling lights and handcrafted gifts.

For a renowned favourite that has stood the test of time, visit Kurfürstendamm. Doubling as an attraction, the Champs-Élysées of Berlin is not only dotted with luxury boutiques, but also houses gourmet restaurants, concert halls and opera houses.

If the modern-day chic in you is calling, browse Friedrichstraße. The mix of contemporary and classic gives you plenty of options to fill your suitcase. For the laid-back shopper, Bergmannstraße and Oranienstraße are your go-to. They even hold weekly markets for vintage treasures and upcycled good
