Yerevan: Soul of Armenia

Book your visit to Yerevan

The Armenian city of Yerevan is alive with energy, blending ancient tales with a modern vibe that you can feel in every corner. Locals lounge in outdoor cafés, sharing laughs against the backdrop of picturesque mountains. Here, history isn’t tucked away – it’s woven into the walls, the art and even the food.

Markets burst with colour and stories, and the people of Yerevan are quick to share them with a warm smile. There are countless sights to see and natural wonders to discover. It’s a city that pulls you in with its charm and promise of adventure.

Things to do in Yerevan

Make your way to the 572-step Yerevan Cascade, an architectural marvel that begins with a Sculpture Garden at its base and culminates with The October Revolution Memorial at the top. The view will leave you in awe, with the majestic Mount Ararat in sight. Beyond the Cascade, you’ll find the towering Mother Armenia Monument in Victory Park.

In the heart of Yerevan, Republic Square pulses with life. Its stunning fountains and grand buildings offer a taste of Yerevan’s vibrant culture. Wander through streets lined with murals, adding a splash of creativity to every alleyway.

Don’t miss the Blue Mosque for a cultural awakening – it’s the last mosque standing in the city.

Activities in Yerevan

Visit Matenadaran, home to the world’s largest collection of ancient manuscripts. It’s a treasure trove for book lovers and history buffs, filled with texts that chronicle Armenia’s rich past.

Take a moment to reflect at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial, an architectural masterpiece that stands as a powerful symbol of resilience and remembrance. Its striking design and serene surroundings will leave a lasting impression.

For a change of pace, retreat to Lover’s Park, a green oasis in the heart of the city. Perfect for a quiet stroll, the park features romantic bridges and flowing streams. In the winter months, swap your stroll for skis and head to Mount Teghenis. Known as Armenia’s winter wonderland, it offers fantastic skiing and winter sports for all skill levels.

Food in Yerevan

The bustling Gum Market is the place to be to watch Armenian chefs in action. Marvel at them making delicious lavash, Armenia’s traditional flatbread, baked fresh in clay ovens. Tolma (also known as dolma) is another must-try dish that features minced meat and rice, wrapped in grape leaves or cabbage.

Every city seems to have its own twist on dumplings and Yerevan is no different with its mante – crispy, bite-sized snacks filled with spiced lamb and served with a tangy yogurt sauce. For a sweet treat, try gata – a buttery Armenian cake that is meant to be served with tea or coffee.

Taste many of these delights on Tumanyan Street, where local vendors serve up everything from grilled meat mains to bite-sized snacks.

Shopping in Yerevan

Every purchase in Yerevan feels like stepping into a museum of Armenian culture. Start your shopping adventure at the famed Vernissage Market, where Carpet Row unfolds in a kaleidoscope of colours and designs. These handwoven Armenian rugs, with their intricate patterns, each tell a tale of tradition and artistry. While you’re there, keep an eye out for unique Soviet memorabilia and be sure to stock up on dried fruits. You’ll find stalls brimming with apricots, figs, walnuts and more.

For high-end stores and chic boutiques, head to Northern Avenue. Meanwhile, the Gold Market is home to delicate jewellery, often crafted with local motifs by skilled Armenian goldsmiths.
