Beijing: An ancient yet modern city

Book your visit to Beijing

The capital of China is full of surprises thanks to the contrast between ancient secrets and ultra-modern charm. Wander through buzzing alleys where the aroma of sizzling dumplings mingles with bursts of laughter and chatter from hidden tea houses, or roam around tranquil gardens where locals do morning tai chi.

Beijing brims with wonders that span centuries. Delve right in and explore sleek high-rises, fascinating temples, and neon lights that glow over traditional rooftops. Find yourself haggling in bustling markets one minute, and admiring a sunset over a beautiful lake the next. With its larger-than-life personality, Beijing is the perfect stop for a thrilling adventure.

Things to do in Beijing

A trip to China wouldn’t be complete without seeing the Great Wall, where the views are mesmerising. Marvel at the Mutianyu section, just a two-hour drive from the city. Its stone traces the curves of rugged hills, making every step feel monumental.

Then retreat to the Summer Palace, otherwise known as Yiheyuan, a sprawling oasis of calm lakes, marble bridges, and the iconic Longevity Hill. Once reserved for royalty, this scenic garden is now open to the public and features ornate, timeless pavilions.

You can also meander through the parklands at Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven, one of Beijing’s most revered landmarks. Another spectacle is Yonghe Temple, where Tibetan Buddhist art, red-lacquered halls, and the scent of incense evokes a sense of peace.

Activities in Beijing

Chaoyang Park is a lush sanctuary that’s even larger than New York’s Central Park. Watch locals practicing tai chi in the morning, or paddle through the serene lake. Discover the outdoors even further at Houhai Lake, where you can take a boat ride or ice skate.

After heading out onto the waters, wander through the famous hutongs. These narrow alleyways were once abundant across the city and now preserve an authentic slice of Beijing. Walk the winding lanes filled with courtyard homes and quirky shops, or look for a cosy eatery – especially near Gulou.

Once you’ve indulged in a delicious meal, you’ll be ready to step into the Forbidden City. This golden-roofed labyrinth of palaces and halls once hosted emperors. It forms a stark contrast with Tiananmen Square, a symbol of modern China.

Food in Beijing

To get a taste of Beijing, try the city's favourite street breakfast, jianbing, a savoury pancake filled with eggs, spring onions and crunchy wonton. Spot vendors selling this delicacy on Wangfujing Snack Street, where you can also sample bing tanghulu – candied tofu drizzled in sauces. Dumpling lovers can rejoice too, as jiaozi (dough wrapped around a succulent filling) is found on every corner.

For a sit-down dining experience, head to the vibrant 798 Art District, featuring edgy restaurants blending Eastern and Western cuisine. Visit one of them and dive into Beijing's popular hot pot of meat and vegetables cooking in an aromatic broth. Savour even more flavours by tucking into crispy, golden Peking duck. This sumptuous dish is served with pancakes, hoisin sauce and green onions.

Shopping in Beijing

Journey through the Panjiayuan Antique Market, where age-old traditions meet present-day luxury. This open-air treasure trove has over 4,000 stalls overflowing with Chinese antiques, vintage calligraphy, jade jewellery and carved wooden ornaments. If you’re looking for pearls, electronics or souvenirs, make your way to Hongqiao Pearl Market.

In the historic hutongs, Nanluoguxiang shopping street combines classical appeal with a contemporary vibe. Boutiques are stocked with everything from silk scarves to Chinese-inspired home décor. To uncover the latest collections by high-end and global brands, browse the stores in Taikoo Li. This sophisticated complex is ideal for window shopping too, with elegant architecture and chic cafés.
