Sulaymaniyah: A jewel of the Middle East

Book your visit to Sulaymaniyah

Sulaymaniyah is a fascinating city with a charming mix of old and new architecture. Its rich cultural heritage and friendly and welcoming nature immediately make you feel at home. Whether it’s bargain hunters in the souqs or families enjoying some time together, life in Sulaymaniyah is always busy.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Goizha and Glazarda mountain ranges, the city is a vibrant metropolis that embraces visitors and introduces them to the ancient Kurdish culture. A centre for agriculture as well as commerce, the newer aspects of the city provide visitors with modern galleries, malls, shopping and dining, all surrounded by magnificent mountain scenery. Sulaymaniyah is one of Iraq’s true jewels and is popular with travellers who want to discover the essence of Kurdish life.

Things to do in Sulaymaniyah

Explore a culture that stretches back over 100,000 years at the Slemani Museum, one of Iraq’s most important collections of artefacts. For a more focused look at Kurdish culture, the Kurd’s Heritage Museum on Mawlawi Street is full of metalwork, textiles and items that tell the story of the Kurdish people.

While there are plenty of modern malls in the city, Sulaymaniyah Bazaar has that authentic ambience where everything from local food, to jewellery and perfume is on offer. Look out for fresh almond and pistachio paste, a delicious treat that’s made for you while you wait.

For a great family day out, Chavi Land theme park is popular with locals and tourists alike. It’s also home to Iraq’s largest Ferris wheel. Take the cable car to the top of the mountain for a spectacular sunset view.

Activities in Sulaymaniyah

For a glimpse into the Sulaymaniyah’s recent past, a visit to the Amna Suraka Museum is a fascinating way to learn about the region’s history.

The city’s hammams are a chance to pamper yourself for an afternoon. The Mufti Hammam is a cultural icon and the only women-only hammam in the city. It’s a fascinating relic that has remained unchanged for over 200 years.

Sulaymaniyah has plenty of open spaces and parks to explore, the largest of which is Azadi Park, just a short stroll from the Bazaar. It’s a tranquil, relaxing space that’s very family-focused.

Trade the hustle and bustle of the city for the calming charm of Iraq’s countryside. With a network of hiking trails, you’ll find yourself on some wonderful mountain adventures. It’s advisable to hire a local guide to help you traverse the many trails.

Food in Sulaymaniyah

Food and beverages are a key part of Kurdish culture, and throughout the city you’ll find tea houses, restaurants, and street food on offer. The tea houses in particular are well worth a visit, but bear in mind that some of them are for men only. For a more international dining experience, check out the city’s malls food halls and restaurants.

If you want to try traditional Kurdish food, look for dishes like yaprakh (stuffed vine leaves), masgouf (roasted freshwater fish with tamarind and spices) or shorbat rumman (a soup made with pomegranate juice, split peas and ground beef).

Explore the area between Ali Naji and Salim Street and you can sample some of the region’s local street food including pitta bread stuffed with meat and vegetables, warm and spicy soups and shawarma.

Shopping in Sulaymaniyah

At the heart of the city is its central market and while it’s a busy, bustling place, you’ll get a real sense of how it feels to live like a local. There are the usual tourist trinkets on offer, as well as plenty of fresh fruit and delicious local food.

The city has plenty of malls to explore too, with the City Star Mall and the Majidi Mall being two of the best. You’ll find everything from antique boutiques to department stores and international brands, as well as family entertainment options and food courts.

The Old Town is home to the main Bazaar, but around its side streets, you’ll find smaller stores, boutiques and shops selling artisan crafts and jewellery. As the shopping areas are very central, it’s easy to go exploring without having to go too far from the hotels and restaurants downtown.
