Things to do in Lagos

Travel back in time at the National Museum. Nigeria’s rich heritage unfolds through ancient artefacts, including spectacular bronze sculptures and regal treasures that whisper stories of kingdoms of the past.

Finally, a trip to the beach is a must, and Eleko Beach is one of the most well-known. Located an hour out of town, this 60-km stretch of golden sand is an idyllic setting for unwinding in the sun. 

Activities in Lagos

Just a short drive from the city centre lies the Lekki Conservation Centre. This lush, green nature preserve is a breath of fresh air, with the longest canopy walk in Africa, suspended high above the forest floor. Capture a bird’s eye view of the stunning treetops and try to spot monkeys swinging from the branches below. The reserve is a sanctuary for wildlife, with colourful peacocks and shy crocodiles lurking in the marshes.

For a more relaxing day out, take a boat journey from the city’s waterfront, over to Tarkwa Beach. Glide across this lagoon to the soft sands of this pristine beach where you can sunbathe and indulge in freshly caught seafood from one of the beachside food stalls.

Food in Lagos

Food in Lagos reflects Nigeria’s diversity as well as its global influences. Flavours are bold and spicy to suit local palettes. 

Indulge in street food like suya – thinly sliced meat, grilled to perfection in a nutty spice blend or hail a vendor selling roasted groundnuts from the comfort of your car whilst you stop at a traffic light.

No trip to Lagos is complete without trying Abula. This dish, native to southwestern Nigeria, is as colourful as it is delicious. It’s a combination of amala, a soft, stretchy swallow made from yam flour, paired with gbegiri, a creamy soup made from black-eyed beans, ewedu – blended, seasoned jute leaves – and obe ata, a rich tomato-based meat stew.

Next, try the classic pairing of eba and okra soup. The okra is made into a stew with either meat, seafood or both. It’s served with eba, another dough-like carbohydrate made from cassava flour. This is a meal best eaten with your hands. Think of the eba as a spoon you use to scoop up the rich, velvety sauce. If you like spicy, umami flavours, you’ll love Nigerian food.

Immerse yourself in a tapestry of culture and inspiration at Lekki Arts and Crafts Market. Each stall tells a story, with talented artisans showcasing handcrafted canvas and leather bags, shoes, beads, woodwork and paintings. Each piece is meticulously made, with lots of character. Marvel at the charming chaos of Balogun Market, Lagos Island, one of Lagos’ largest and most famous markets. Located in the heart of the city, this sprawling marketplace is a labyrinth of rainbow fabrics, sparkling jewellery and everything in between.
