Djibouti: Africa’s hidden gem

Book your visit to Djibouti

Djibouti may be tiny in comparison to its neighbours, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up with personality, a warm welcome, and spectacular natural beauty. Bordered by Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea, it’s one of Africa’s least-known destinations and as such is a true unexplored and unspoilt gem.

From turquoise-blue ocean waters that caress deserted sandy beaches to the raw and wild beauty of the volcanic plateau and the towering mountain ranges to the north, Djibouti has more than its fair share of natural wonders.

The small but busy capital is home to authentic market shopping experiences and a unique cuisine that’s an inspiring combination of African, Middle Eastern and European influences. Take the path less travelled and discover Djibouti with Qatar Airways.

Things to do in Djibouti

While much of Djibouti may be desert, its coastline is the perfect place for exploring the underwater world. Scuba diving in the clear blue water will take you to coral reefs that teem with brightly coloured fish, turtles and marine creatures.

If you prefer to stay on top of the water, you can kayak in the calm waters of the Gulf of Tadjoura and discover your own isolated beach or snorkel in pristine waters.

Explore Lac’ Assal, the second-lowest point on earth, where huge flocks of pink flamingos congregate and steam from towering limestone chimneys hint at the volcanic activity below the surface.

Or head to Lac Abbé to see an astonishing contrast between white salt shores and vivid blue waters. This is the perfect destination for wildlife and landscape photography.

Activities in Djibouti

Djibouti City is it’s one of Africa’s most rapidly expanding communities, and is the administrative centre for the entire country. Head to the national library where you can find out more about the history and culture of this unique enclave through a series of exhibitions.

The country’s Tropical Aquarium is well worth a visit in Djibouti City, as is the Presidential Palace, a grand building with European influences.

For some spectacular views, lace up your hiking boots and take a guided climb of the dormant Ardoukoba volcano. Or book a place on a snorkelling trip to the Bay of Ghoubbet to see the majestic splendour of the huge yet gentle whale sharks.

Food in Djibouti

Djibouti food is a delightful mix of influences from neighbouring countries such as Yemen, Ethiopia and Somalia, as well as Arabic and French cuisines. Spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and saffron play a key role in adding depth and flavour to dishes, and the most common meats used in traditional Djibouti cooking are beef, goat or lamb, as well as fish closer to the coast.

Try marake kaloune, a spicy fish stew made with tilapia or sea bass, rice, onions, okra, eggplants and tomatoes.

Fah-fah is a traditional dish in the south of the country, made with goat meat, vegetables and a dash of green chillies to give it a kick.

And if you have a sweet tooth, xalwo (also known as halwa) is a chewy sweet made with brown sugar, cardamom, cloves and saffron.

Shopping in Djibouti

The main shopping centre is Djibouti City, where you’ll find bustling markets such as Les Caisses Market, selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to handicrafts, textiles and bead jewellery.

For boutique shopping, head to Grand Marche in the city centre. Here you’ll find plenty of both local and international shops selling traditional African clothes as well as spices, electrical goods, souvenirs and crafts.

The city also has a good selection of upscale malls selling high-quality international brands and well-known labels. But for that authentic shopping experience, the hectic and exciting markets are hard to beat. Just be sure to practice your haggling skills first.
