Welcome to Penang – the Pearl of the Orient

Penang is a truly enchanting place. Known as the Pearl of the Orient, the city sits on the northwest coast of Malaysia and is one of the most family-friendly, year-round destinations on the planet.

Malaysia is an intoxicating blend of ancient and modern, with natural beauty and staggering man-made wonders. Penang epitomises the best that this incredible country has to offer.

Brimming with charming things to see and do, from galleries and malls to temples and parks, Penang takes you on a journey through Malaysian culture and history. Pagodas are nestled in the lush forests above the city, and pristine, white-sand beaches tempt you to dive in and experience the underwater world in the warm, clear ocean.

We’ll take you on a tour of our top tourist attractions in Penang, Malaysia, and give you some hints on exciting things to see and do while you’re there.

Kek Lok Si Temple

A peaceful setting where you can relax for a while, Kek Lok Si temple is one of Penang’s true gems. This famous site is covered in bold hues and ornately carved façades.

Explore the halls, pavilions and the seven-storey pagoda of Rama VI. Then take a funicular ride to the top of the hill where you’ll find the temple’s main pagoda surrounded by exquisite gardens.

When visiting Kek Lok Si temple, remember to watch the turtles swimming in Liberation Pond – it’s believed to bring good luck!

Penang National Park

Escape the buzz of the city with a visit to Penang National Park, one of the island’s most stunning natural attractions.

Wander along Monkey Beach, with its crystal-clear waters and serene ambience. You’ll see monkeys from your boat tour or jungle trek as you head towards this remote spot.

You can also go high above the treetops on the canopy walkway, giving you a panoramic view of the park’s extremely diverse ecosystem. Or admire the marvels of the meromictic lake, with its layers of fresh and saltwater.

Batu Ferringhi Beach

One of the most delightful places to visit in Penang is Batu Ferringhi Beach, the perfect spot for some water sports. There are also nearby theme parks for younger visitors to enjoy, and many excellent restaurants where you can try some spicy Malaysian cuisine.

The beach is awesome for a family day out, with shallow water that’s ideal for a paddle. If you want to go a little deeper, hire a boat and sail out to the greatest diving spots on the island, where you can swim with turtles and brightly coloured fish.

George Town

The UNESCO Heritage Site of George Town is a unique blend of Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures. Featuring colonial architecture, it’s packed with retail and dining establishments such as markets, malls, boutiques and restaurants.

For a glimpse into the character of Penang, take a stroll down Armenian Street. This vibrant location is filled with examples of George Town’s unique street art, shops selling authentic handicrafts, and plenty of cafés where you can take a break and watch the world go by.

The Clan Jetties

Take a walk down to the waterfront and you’ll discover a whole new historic neighbourhood, the Clan Jetties.

Homes in vivid shades line the Weld Quay and form a picturesque floating village. It dates back to the 19th century and is where Chinese migrants originally lived.

The most popular to visit is Chew Jetty, but do bear in mind that the homes are residential. The best way to see them is by taking a guided tour.
