Situated on its own island close to the Malay Peninsula, the city state of Singapore is often considered one of the region’s most accessible destinations. It’s a densely packed nation of more than five million people, made up of Chinese, Malay, Eurasian, and Indian residents. Singapore also has a healthy dose of expatriates from around the world.
Although it is distinctly Asian, Singapore’s origins as a British colony are still plain to see. English is an official language alongside Malay, Chinese and Tamil, but this extraordinary locale is much more than a colonial outpost.
Book a flight to Singapore with Qatar Airways and discover a rich, varied and exotic destination that’s full of surprises.
Flying from Venice
A remarkable destination deserves a remarkable airport, and Venice Marco Polo Airport doesn’t disappoint. Elegant, well designed and efficient, it makes the ideal starting point for your journey. Transportation and parking
Transport to and from Venice Marco Polo Airport can be either through the usual ways – rail, bus and taxi – or by the more scenic method of water taxi.
Venice-Mestre railway station is connected to the airport by the ATVO Fly Bus, while plenty of other buses ferry passengers from Venice and the surrounding area quickly and efficiently.
Taxis run to and from the city and shared taxis are available if you are travelling with companions or work colleagues, for example. The water taxis are very popular and offer you a lasting memory of this remarkable city as you travel towards the airport. Journey time is around 75 minutes.
Parking at the airport is quite good, with long-term and open-air car parks next to the old terminal. There are two more large open-air long-term car parks a short distance from the terminal, and a short-term car park is located directly opposite the airport terminal. Parking can be booked in advance.
Arriving in Venice
Passengers flying from Venice with Qatar Airways depart from the 2nd floor Departures area in the main terminal. There are a total of 70 check-in desks and two lounges for passengers.
As with all European airports, security is tight so allow at least an hour and a half to two hours to check in and clear customs and security checks.
Facilities and amenities
Facilities are good at the airport. Wi-Fi is available for a fee, and there are also fixed internet points throughout the terminal. ATMs and Bureau de Change facilities are plentiful, while an on-site post office also provides currency exchange and some limited business facilities such as faxing.
Food and drink, as you would expect in Italy, is very good and ranges from casual coffee and beverage stalls through to more formal, restaurant-style meals.
Shopping is also good – look out in particular for Venetian glass and leather goods.

If you prefer exploring colonial architecture, then head to the Bras Basah area east of Orchard and north of the Singapore River, to find a cluster of historical buildings and museums. Perhaps the city’s most famous building is the Raffles Hotel (which has appeared in plenty of films), while the National Museum of Singapore offers a more in-depth exploration of the history and culture of the region.
