Book a flight to Luanda with Qatar Airways

Built in 1575, the Portuguese Fortress of São Miguel is perched high above the capital. Make your way up to the top to admire panoramic vistas over the city and Luanda Bay. Head inside to the museum and you can learn all about the fall of colonial Angola, as well as the history of Angola’s armed forces. 

The National Museum of Slavery (Museu Nacional da Escravatura) first opened in 1977. Angola was one of the biggest slave traders on the west coast of Africa. The little white house on the coast where the museum is housed today is where slaves were baptised before they went on the ships to the U.S.. Many photos and lithographs are on display here. Despite the history, it is a positive and thoughtful examination of a dark period in the country’s story, and well worth a visit.

If you fancy a break from the city centre, visit the Kissama National Park. Located around 70km outside the city, this is the country’s only national park. Take a safari to discover unique forestry and protected wildlife, including big game and lions. 

The peninsula around Luanda, known as the Island of Luanda, is home to an upscale beach scene, including a mix of public and private spots. It is a 5km stretch and an idyllic place to relax on the soft sand in the glorious sunshine. This part of town also boasts one of the hottest nightlife scenes. There are more beaches outside of Luanda too, such as  Cabo Ledo, which is around 120km outside of the city and a popular spot for surfing and sunbathing.

The Marginal de Luanda is a meticulously restored boulevard that runs from the port to the Island of Luanda. It is situated along the waterfront, so you can take a relaxing stroll along here and admire the coast and the city skyline. It is also a popular running spot for locals, so if you are feeling energetic, why not take in the sites with a morning jog? 

Eating out is a pastime in Luanda, so you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to great food. There is a whole array of options to choose from for every budget, ranging from down-to-earth street food to elegant fine dining.  Fresh seafood, Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine are firm favourites on most menus in the city. 

There are plenty of bars and restaurants in Ilha de Luanda and The Marginal. This is the go-to destination for the city’s elite; evenings here are all about superb food and great music. You can expect a mix of traditional Angolan dishes and international fare, which will suit even the most discerning of palates. 

One of the hippest restaurants on the block is Restaurante Bordão. If you have a hankering for classic Portuguese barbecue, including fish and seafood, a trip to La Vigia is on the cards. For premium Mediterranean cuisine, including some of the city’s finest seafood, head for Lookal Mar.

The locals tend to shop in the district of Maianda, which is where you will find all the basics. For a more upmarket vibe, head to the downtown area or the port anddo not be surprised to see sports cars galore here, as wealthy locals explore the upmarket shops and international designers. There are also a few malls in Luanda Sul (to the south of the city).

For market shopping, head over to Futungo. This is the biggest craft market anywhere in Angola and artisans come here from all over Angola to showcase their wares. You can expect to find woodwork, hand-painted masks, handmade jewellery and much more besides. It is the ideal destination for unique souvenirs. Just keep in mind that it is only open on Sundays.
