Book flights to Algiers

A trip to Algiers demands exploration of the Kasbah – a bustling warren of shops, cafés and monuments. Here, the smell of coffee mingles with the pungent aromas of spices sold from the shops tucked away in the twisting streets. The Kasbah is also the place to find one of the last remaining examples of 14th-century architecture, in the imposing Great Mosque of Algiers.

Nearby is Maqam Echahid, an exquisite monument built in the shape of three, upstanding palm leaves. It was built in 1982, in commemoration of the Algerian War of Independence. For a serene intermission, head for Le Jardin d’Essai du Hamma, a beautiful recreation area designed for people-watching.

Sending postcards from Algiers is an experience in itself, as the post office (La Grande Poste d’Alger) is an architectural wonder, worthy of its own postcard.

Travel to Algiers and enjoy its lovely beaches. This is where the locals go to socialize, and you will also find the crumbling remains of fishermen’s houses – reminders of a time when people virtually lived on the water.

The crystal blue of the Mediterranean also offers a superb opportunity for water-sports, with exceptional visibility for snorkelling and scuba diving.

However, if you would prefer to stay dry, there are several theatres throughout the city, where you can catch a traditional play. You’ll also find plenty of museums, where you can learn more about the history and culture of the Algerian people.

Gourmands are unlikely to be disappointed on a trip to Algiers. National cuisine is the result of many influences, from the Romans and the Turks, to the more recent French and Spanish.

White bean stews, lamb sausages, honeyed pastries and sugared dates are all in store. If you are visiting during Ramadan, you will find many cafés and restaurants serving bourek (a-meat-filled pastry) and chorba (a vegetable soup often served at breakfast).

Algiers is packed with street markets, giving you the opportunity to buy handmade goods at negotiable prices. Haggling is a way of life in the Kasbah and the markets, so be prepared for some spirited negotiation.

Algerian markets are famous for carpets, which are of outstanding quality. But there are also a generous selection of other goods, such as jewellery, leatherware and finely dyed baskets. Because music takes such a central role in Algerian culture, you will find some stalls selling lutes and other musical instruments.

However, if you are in search of high-end retail, then your trip to Algiers should include a visit to its traditional souqs and modern shopping malls. In both, you will find national brands, as well as international labels.
