Today, West Bengal’s capital continues to capture the hearts of many visitors as it spawns a new generation of filmmakers, writers and poets. One thing is for sure: a trip to Kolkata will always be a memorable one.

Check the price of flights to Kolkata further below and book Economy or Premium Class flights to Kolkata with Qatar Airways to visit India's second-biggest city. Scrape beneath the surface of the former capital of British India, and you'll find a dynamic, friendly city, home to colonial architecture, new suburbs, some of the best restaurants in the country and plenty of things to see in Kolkata.

Flying from New York

The iconic JFK airport is representative of the city it serves – big, busy and vibrant. A total of eight terminals and all the major international carriers connect passengers all over the world.

Packed with facilities and friendly staff, JFK is one of the world’s busiest air hubs. Because the airport is so busy, it is important to plan ahead and know which terminal your Qatar Airways flight leaves from.

Transportation and car parking

The easiest way to get to and from the airport is via the JFK AirTrain - a 24-hour service that connects all of the airport terminals with rail and metro stations.

The New York City Airporter Bus runs every 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal and the Port Authority Bus Terminal to the airport. Taxis are plentiful and a pre-booked limousine service is also available. Car parking for Terminal 8 is in the ‘Red’ Lot, although shuttles from other parking zones provide you with more options if the Red Lot is full.

Arriving in New York

Qatar Airways flights from New York leave from Terminal 8. The free AirTrain service connects the terminals, which is particularly useful if you are transferring from an internal or other international flight.

If your flight leaves from a high-numbered gate, it is advisable to use the free motorized shuttle, due to the distance between the departure area and the gates. The Oasis Lounge (charges applicable) in Terminal 4 is open 24 hours a day and has extensive facilities including showers.

Facilities and amenities

While waiting for your Qatar Airways flight from New York, Terminal 8 offers extensive food and drink outlets serving snacks and fast food, light meals, coffee and refreshments.

There is also a wide range of retail outlets selling everything from watches and sunglasses to a dedicated ‘Metropolitan Museum of Art’ shop. Facilities include baby-care areas, dry cleaning, a pet relief area and a Welcome Centre. Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport for a fee.

Arriving in Kolkata

Formerly known as Calcutta, this huge city is the second largest in India and one of the country’s true commercial powerhouses. A juxtaposition of ultra-modern developments and traditional values, it’s a maelstrom of sounds, smells and sites that can be almost overwhelming to start with. But you’ll also find this to be an incredibly friendly city, and once you’ve adjusted to the frenetic pace of life here, truly inspiring too.

Book a flight to Kolkata with Qatar Airways and you’ll be immersed in a truly unique destination from the moment you step off the plane. There are moments of serenity to be discovered in its parks and gardens, before you’re off again, swept along on a tide of energy and enthusiasm.

Tourist attractions

Kolkata is a vast city, so it pays to plan your trip carefully so that you can see the best that each region has to offer. In central Kolkata your focal point is the magnificent open parkland known as Maidan, which offers a tranquil respite from the traffic and noise for a while. Close by you’ll find a clutch of attractions including the imposing citadel of Fort William (visits by prior arrangement only), and the city’s most famous landmark, the towering Victoria Monument, carved from white marble.

Head to northern Kolkata and you’ll discover the beautiful Nakhoda Mosque, the city’s largest and a truly stunning example of Islamic architecture and art. The Marble Palace, built in 1835, is a must see, set in a perfectly manicured acre of tropical gardens.

The south of the city is a little less congested and is known for its open spaces, including the park and boating lake of Rabindra Sarovar and the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, the second oldest golf club in the world. You’ll also find the wonderfully lively Big Bazaar, where you can buy just about anything you can imagine.

Travel considerations

Flights to Kolkata with Qatar Airways land at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Before you fly to Kolkata please check the visa and passport requirements.
