Tourist attractions
Located four miles north of Siem Reap, the Angkor Temples are the main attraction in Siem Reap. Constructed in the 12th century, this ancient temple complex has been left behind from the days of the Khmer Empire, and many remain in spectacular condition. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site attracts over a million visitors a year and it has to be seen to be believed.
As the country continues to revive its culture after the oppression of the Khmer Rouge, artisans and craftspeople are taking centre stage. Les Chantiers Écoles is a wonderful example of this in action. It teaches local people the traditional skills and crafts such as silk painting and lacquerware, and is well worth a visit. The guided tours not only give you a chance to see skilled artisans in action but to also support the school by buying some exquisite and unique souvenirs while you’re there.
Wat Damnak is a peaceful haven right in the heart of the city. Take a walk around the colourful gardens and admire the immaculate shrines, statues and carvings. You can visit the temple, too, as well as a public library with the country’s biggest collection of books.

Leisure activities
The Phare Circus is Cambodia’s version of Cirque du Soleil. The incredible performances are designed to retell Khmer folktales through a blend of music, acrobatics, dance, and modern circus skills. Every performer in the troupe has been trained by Phare Ponleu Selapak, a professional programme that offers training to young people from impoverished backgrounds. Shows take place daily in the big top tent in Siem Reap.
If you want to explore beyond Siem Reap, you could take a day trip to Phnom Kulen (or “Kulen Mountain”); it’s only a short drive out of town. Here you’ll discover a beautiful national park and a sacred site, complete with a stunning hilltop temple. There are two waterfalls where you can swim, along with picnic areas. You can also explore Kbal Spean, a famous archaeological site with elaborate carvings in the riverbed.

Food
There’s certainly no shortage of places to eat in Siem Reap, which is a haven for food lovers. Unsurprisingly, Khmer cuisine is the star of the show here; think tender meat with rice, fried noodles and green mango salad. You can take your pick from homely cooking in inexpensive cafés like Meng Café, and plenty of street food too. There’s also an array of upmarket restaurants serving modern takes on national dishes; head to Phnom Penh, which is considered one of the finest restaurants in Cambodia.
Siem Reap is also home to a burgeoning coffee-house scene. Don’t be surprised to see sociable Western-style spots serving fantastic coffee and tasty nibbles. Sister Srey Cafe, The Hive and The Little Red Fox Espresso are among the best in town.

Shopping
The Made in Cambodia Market showcases some of the country’s finest craftsmanship. You’ll find an abundance of artisanal products and luxury goods on offer here, amid a buzzy atmosphere. Plus there’s regular live entertainment and a handful of cafés.
The Old Market (known as “Psar Chaa”) is a hive for locals and tourists alike. The part of the market that runs along the riverfront is well stocked with colourful souvenirs to bring home with you; there’s everything from silverworks, brass sculptures and art to t-shirts, jewellery and handbags.
