Capital of the ancient Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Amman is an extraordinary juxtaposition of traditional and modern. Vibrant, energetic and with a distinctly cosmopolitan air, it’s one of the most progressive cities in the region.

Book a flight to Amman with Qatar Airways and you’ll quickly discover just how exciting this progressive destination can be.

With more than 7,000 years of recorded history behind it, Amman is one of the Middle East’s cultural epicentres. The first thing you’ll notice about the Jordanian capital is its skyline, defined by the seven hills on which the city was originally built. Fly to Amman to see these hills that have helped define the city’s various districts, each showcasing its own charm and attractions.

Formerly called Philadelphia, after the Ptolemaic king Philadelphus, Amman has been influenced by several cultures. Many expanding civilisations have left their mark on the city, from the Ammonites, Assyrians and Nabateans, to the Romans, Umayyads and Ottomans. Each of them once considered the city their home and are credited for having a profound impact on its remarkable architecture. As a result, Amman’s buildings are as varied as they are startling, charting the ages between antiquity and modernity, but with no more than a street between them.

Book a flight to Amman with Qatar Airways and discover a rich tapestry of history against the backdrop of a slick, modern and vibrant city.

Arriving in Amman

Capital of the ancient Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Amman is an extraordinary juxtaposition of traditional and modern. Vibrant, energetic and with a distinctly cosmopolitan air, it’s one of the most progressive cities in the region.

Book a flight to Amman with Qatar Airways and you’ll quickly discover just how exciting this progressive destination can be.

Amman has chosen to embrace the 21st century, and while it is packed with ancient temples, ruins and beautiful mosques, it is also a city that focuses on art and literature. However, Amman also has its traditional side, and celebrates its history and culture in museums and beautifully preserved monuments.

Tourist attractions

The Citadel is located on Amman’s highest hill, Jebel al-Qala’a and is the location of the modern city’s predcessor, Rabbath-Ammon. It is surrounded by a beautifully preserved wall, but its most striking features are the Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace.

To get a better understanding of the history of Amman, visit the Jordan museum located next to City Hall. This internationally renowned museum is packed full of artefacts from as far back as the Bronze age, and helps visitors understand the context of many of the city’s monuments and ruins such as the Roman amphitheatre.

King Abdullah’s mosque is a must-see for its stunning blue dome and its Islamic museum, while Darat al Funun or 'small house of the arts' in Jabal el Weibdeh is an intimate art gallery that demonstrates the city’s love of culture and beauty.

Travel Considerations
