The capital city of Oman's southern Zufar and Dhofar region, it is also the country’s second city and famous for the Khareef Festival that celebrates the monsoon, as well as being the birthplace of Sultan Qaboo.
Although a little off the tourist trail, it is an interesting destination for more adventurous travellers, especially those who want to immerse themselves in Oman’s rich culture and heritage.
Book a flight to Salalah with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover a city full of character. Historically famous for the Frankincense trade, today it’s a busy commercial centre that welcomes business visitors all year round.
The best time to visit is in the cooler months, as the summer heat can be quite extreme if you’re not used to high temperatures.
Tourist attractions
Most visitors come to Salalah for the Khareef Festival, although there are other attractions to discover if you have a little time on your hands to explore the city. If you want to experience authentic souq life then head to the Old Town, in Haffa.
The Haffa souq has plenty of collectibles on offer, including Frankincense, dates, handicrafts, and souvenirs. Be prepared to haggle.
Al Baleed Archaeological Site is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and internationally important as a record of the ancient civilisation that founded Oman.
Here you’ll also find a museum dedicated to the Frankincense trade – once more important than gold as a religious artefact throughout the Middle East.
To get away from the heat, particularly in the summer, head to Al Haffa Beach, which is very clean, spacious and with excellent snorkelling and diving facilities.
Be aware that during the summer it can get a little crowded as everyone heads to the beach to cool down. A less crowded but equally picturesque option is Dharaiz Beach, well known for its palm trees.
