Tourist attractions
The enchanting Old Town, in the heart of the city, is a great start for your trip to Sarajevo. Tread the cobbled, medieval streets that have survived centuries of conflict, and discover the city’s eastern identity, with beautiful mosques and oriental-style buildings. Art is hugely important in Sarajevo, and some of the finest examples of regional talent can be found at the Academy of Fine Arts, now housed in a former church.
The town will forever be associated with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand – the momentous event that triggered the First World War. The bridge where the event took place still stands, and is marked by a plaque and a small museum.
Head to the Yellow Fortress, or follow the path through the war cemetery at the eastern end of the town, for a panoramic view of the city and surrounding countryside.

Leisure activities
Sarajevo is easy to tour on foot, giving you the chance to see the sights at your own pace. One of the best ways to see the finest, and least-known, parts of the city is to join a walking tour with a native guide.
Sarajevo’s locals love football. You can catch a game at the Olympic Stadium, which was originally built for the 1984 Winter Olympic Games. For winter-sports lovers, Sarajevo is a treasure, with ski slopes that are far less crowded, but no less challenging, than the more popular locations across Europe. There are 28 km of trails available to skiers of all aptitudes.
There are plenty of festivals, year round, to enjoy during your visit to Sarajevo, such as the Sarajevo Film Festival in the summer, and the MESS International Theatre Festival in October.

Food
Sarajevo has a surprisingly varied food culture, with plenty of local dishes that you won’t find anywhere else. Burek is a meat pie sold in layers at many snack shops and street vendors, and is a popular on-the-go snack.
Pita is a pie made from filo pastry and has a variety of fillings including meat (meso), Bosnian “young” cheese (similar to ricotta), cheese and spinach (a local favourite), spicy potato, and pumpkin. Pita is often served with a traditional tangy yoghurt sauce.
For a selection of restaurants that serve both international and local cuisine, head to the central shopping district.

Shopping
Sarajevo and the surrounding region are best known for quality copperware. Sold in outlets throughout the city, these trinkets are ideal souvenirs.
The largest shopping malls are SCC, BBI, Alta and Importanne Shopping Centar, all of which house a good selection of both international brand outlets and local boutiques selling more traditional handicrafts, as well as luxury items.
