Flying from Kolkata
Kolkata Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport serves the city of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta) and is the largest in eastern India. This modern airport is named after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a prominent leader of the Indian independence movement. Today, it is one of the busiest in India, but has placed the emphasis on delivering a high quality passenger experience for both inbound and outbound travellers. This constant desire to improve their service has led to the airport winning the accolade of Best Improved Airport in the Pacific region from the Airport Council International in both 2014 and 2015.
Transportation and parking
The old train service is currently being replaced by a new Metro system, but transport to and from the airport is still very good. The overground track connects the airport's Biman Bandar station to the centre via Dum Dum Junction and Majerhat Station, but be advised that it only runs up until 6:30 in the evening. The expanding Metro system runs up until 10pm. Shuttle buses to the airport are plentiful and are air conditioned, making them a pleasant alternative. There are also plenty of taxis available, although it’s best to go for the pre-paid Yellow Taxis to ensure you are being charged the correct fare for your journey. Currently, car parking is very limited (approximately 250 spaces) although this is due to improve once the airport refurbishment has been completed.
Arriving at Kolkata
Passengers flying from Kolkata Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport with Qatar Airways depart from the International Concourse. It is advisable to allow at least two hours before your flight is due to depart to clear check-in and customs.
Facilities and amenities
There are three lounges at the airport, but no conference or business facilities on site. Wi-Fi access is available across the public areas, with the first 30 minutes free. There are also a number of Internet cafés in the airport. Food vendors offer a good choice of light refreshments, the ubiquitous tea (chai) and other drinks, as well as both local Indian and international cuisine. A range of retail outlets sell good quality local goods for those last-minute gift ideas, as well as high-end perfumes, leather goods and accessories.
