Serving one of Bangladesh’s rapidly expanding regions, Osmani International Airport is the third largest in the country and a key departure point for leisure and business travellers. The airport started out providing a mainly domestic service for internal flights, but as the operation expanded and the runway was upgraded, the airport has been able to accommodate larger aircraft. This in turn has increased its popularity as a major air transport hub, and passengers flying from Sylhet with Qatar Airways will find this to be a busy, well organised and very efficient starting point for their journey.

Flying from Sylhet
Serving one of Bangladesh’s rapidly expanding regions, Osmani International Airport is the third largest in the country and a key departure point for leisure and business travellers. The airport started out providing a mainly domestic service for internal flights, but as the operation expanded and the runway was upgraded, the airport has been able to accommodate larger aircraft. This in turn has increased its popularity as a major air transport hub, and passengers flying from Sylhet with Qatar Airways will find this to be a busy, well organised and very efficient starting point for their journey.
Transportation and parking
The easiest way to get to the airport is by taxi or rickshaw, depending on the amount of luggage you have. Some of the larger hotels in the city offer airport transfer shuttle services, although this will depend on the number of passengers requiring the service at any one time. Buses are infrequent and somewhat unreliable, and can be very crowded and therefore not a practical option for those travelling with small children or excessive luggage. Limousine hire is available for VIPs, and this is usually arranged by your hotel concierge or reception. Parking at the airport is limited to around 300 vehicles, and the airport car park is located in front of the terminal entrance.
Arriving in Sylhet
Passengers flying from Sylhet with Qatar Airways depart from the main terminal Departures hall. The airport terminal is quite small, so it is relatively easy to find your way around. Large information boards provide passengers with essential details of flight times and gates on arrival. Security at the airport is exceptionally tight, and luggage searches are frequent and thorough. Allow approximately two hours before your flight is due to depart to check-in and go through security checks, and make sure that all your documentation is in order before you arrive at the airport.
Facilities and amenities
Facilities are somewhat limited at this small airport, although there are plans to expand the amount of retail and food vendors serving passengers as numbers increase. A Duty Free shop provides a selection of last-minute impulse buys and gifts, while a small selection of food and beverage stands offer on-the-go snacks, the majority of which are Halal. Banking and currency exchange facilities operate in the airport, and it is best to have some cash on you as many of the food and drink stands will not accept card payments. A handful of retail outlets sell travel essentials, snacks, canned drinks and bottled water, as well as books and magazines.
Arriving in Muscat
Muscat, Oman’s capital, is actually a fusion of three individual towns. Muscat itself is the "walled city", and the site of the royal palaces, while Matrah (Matruh), which was originally a fishing village and is now the location of the remarkable Matrah Souq. The third part of this complex location is Ruwi, the commercial and diplomatic centre of the city.

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is the third-largest mosque in the world, and a truly special place of contemplation and devotion. It’s also home to some spectacular artefacts, including a dazzling Swarovski crystal chandelier, and the second largest hand made Persian carpet in the world.
Muscat has plenty of open spaces too, and one in particular is popular with visitors. The Qurum National Park is also known as the Rose Gardens, and has spectacular displays of fragrant blooms all year round, as well as a man-made waterfall and lake.
A journey of 100km will bring you to Wadi Shab, a journey that is well worth making to see this natural wonder. Emerald green pools and dramatic caves make this an unexpected and beautiful excursion from the hustle and bustle of Muscat city.
