Flying from Bucharest
The larger of two airports serving Romania’s capital, Henri Coandă International Airport is a busy international air transport hub that is growing in importance in Europe.
It is currently undergoing a massive, multi-million dollar improvement programme that will expand its capacity for both arrivals and departures, including flights from Bucharest with Qatar Airways.
The airport is approximately 16.5km from the city centre, and the staff will ensure that your departure is smooth, hassle-free and easy.
Transportation and parking
The airport is particularly well served by public transport, with a train station less than a kilometre from the main terminal.
Buses ferry passengers to and from the station, as well as from the city centre’s bus station – journey times from the heart of Bucharest are approximately 30-60 minutes, depending on the time of day (rush hour can be particularly busy).
Taxis are plentiful and take around 20-40 minutes, again depending on traffic conditions, and some major hotels also run airport shuttle services.
Short-term parking is located close to the terminals, with long-stay facilities a little further away and connected to the main airport by shuttle services.
Arriving in Otopeni, Bucharest
Passengers flying from Bucharest with Qatar Airways depart from the Departures Hall within the main terminal building.
As the terminal is particularly large, ensure that you allow plenty of time before your plane departs to check in and clear security checks and customs.
Facilities and amenities
The terminal is split into two with a shop-lined walkway connecting the two. In the departures section there are plenty of dining options, including snacks and takeaway drinks and light bites, through to more substantial restaurant-style meals.
Shops offer a selection of goods and accessories, including some very good quality leather items. Wi-Fi is free and public telephones are plentiful (note that they use pre-paid cards rather than cash – cards are available to buy throughout the airport).
Other facilities include a hairdresser, a public viewing gallery and a pharmacy, as well as several lounge areas for passengers.
Arriving in Sydney
Despite what most people think, Sydney is not actually Australia’s capital, but is probably its most iconic and instantly recognisable one, thanks to exceptional monuments such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
Modern, thriving and continually expanding, Sydney is the powerhouse of Australia and one of the most vibrant cities on the Pacific Rim.
Book a flight to Sydney with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover that it’s also a centre for the arts, music and theatre, with an incredibly relaxed and laid-back atmosphere for such a large metropolis.
Warm and friendly people welcome visitors with open arms, and its business sector is innovative and progressive, making it an excellent destination for business travellers too.
Tourist attractions
Top of the list has to be the Sydney Opera House. It sits on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and adjacent to the Sydney central business district and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
It is in fact a collection of venues that host 1,500 performances every year, attracting over a million visitors from around the world. From opera to modern dance, theatre to mime, this is the cultural heart of the city.
Many of the city’s landmarks are clustered around the harbour, and an excellent and very relaxing way to see them is to take a ferry east from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo or Manly, or west under the Harbour Bridge towards Parramatta.
This will also give you a great view of the harbour itself.
The city is famous for its museums, and visitors can choose from the Australian Museum, which has extensive exhibits covering Australia’s unique flora and fauna, through to the interactive Powerhouse Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
To find out more about Australia’s First Nation people, head to the Royal National Park where you’ll find Aboriginal rock carvings, or take a guided interpretative walk at Berry Island.
