Activities in Islamabad
Outdoor activities are abundant in Islamabad, with the majestic Margalla Hills situated just a few kilometres from the city centre. It provides an ideal setting for rock climbing and hiking, including the Dara Janglan – otherwise known as Hiking Trail 5. This scenic nature walk is also popular for bird watching. The nearby Bruti Waterfall is a hidden gem and typical rest stop for hikers.
Take a car out of the city to Rawal Lake for water-based activities. It is an idyllic spot for boating, fishing and a picnic by the waters.
For a more relaxing encounter, head to Fatima Jinnah Park, also known as F-9 Park. It’s a great space for picnics and leisurely walks. Shakarparian National Park is another recreational place that offers panoramic views of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
Food in Islamabad
Head to Saidpur Village for authentic Pakistani street food. Indulge in pani puri (hollow, fried dough balls filled with potatoes), crispy samosas, flavourful fritters called pakoras, and tangy chaat – crispy, fried dough wafers. F-10 Markaz is also an area filled with international street food, serving everything from burgers to samosas.
Pakistani barbecue is another must-try, with juicy kebabs and spicy tikka demonstrating the country’s grilling traditions. Make sure to try a traditional breakfast, featuring halwa puri – fried flatbread served with a semolina pudding, nihari – a spiced beef stew, and parathas – flaky flatbread.
Islamabad Food Street is a hotspot for even more local foods, but also international cuisine. Be sure to taste Pakistan’s most favoured dish, biryani, which consists of layers of spiced rice and tender meat.
