Peshawar: Pakistan’s historic hub

Book your visit to Peshawar

Peshawar is a city where history whispers through ancient streets, and the scent of sizzling kebabs mingles with tales of the Silk Road. Nestled at the crossroads of civilisations, Peshawar is one of South Asia’s oldest cities.

Stroll through its bustling bazaars, where traders have gathered for centuries bartering spices, silk, and precious stones. Admire the architecture, where the city’s proud heritage is evident in its landmarks and painted into its traditions.

Peshawar isn’t just its past though, it’s alive with modern energy too. Whether you are exploring its contemporary side, delving into its rich history, indulging in its culinary treasures, or admiring the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains, Peshawar won’t disappoint.

Things to do in Peshawar

Take a look around Sethi House, a stunning 19th-century mansion. Its intricately carved balconies, stained-glass windows and labyrinthine halls transport you back to Peshawar’s trading past. Another historic must-see is Chowk Yadgar, the beating heart of the old city, and once a hub for traders along the Silk Road. Nearby, the Mahabat Khan Masjid is an architectural wonder with its gleaming white minarets and courtyard.

The Bab-e-Khyber is a gateway steeped in history, marking the entrance to the legendary Khyber Pass – a mountain pass on the border of Afghanistan. Stand beneath the iconic archway, where caravans and conquerors once marched. For panoramic views and exploration into Peshawar’s legacy, head to Fort Bala Hisar to witness years of rulers and revolutions.

Visit the Peshawar Museum – its magnificent collection of Gandhara artefacts spans more than 1,000 years. Admire Buddhist sculptures, ancient coins, and regal Mughal relics that reveal the city’s deep-rooted connections to the Silk Road.

Nature lovers can adventure into the Hindu Kush Mountains, which beckon with their majestic peaks and rugged charm. Only a short trip from Peshawar, these mountains are a hiker’s delight, with mesmerising vistas.

Closer to the city, stroll through the relaxing paths of Shahi Bagh, otherwise known as the Royal Garden. Once a retreat for Mughal emperors, the historic garden enchants with its lush greenery, floral displays, and an air of timeless romance. Food in Peshawar

Peshawar is known for its food scene in Pakistan, and here stories are told through its dishes infused with spices and smoke. At the centre of this culinary capital lies the chapli kebab, a fiery masterpiece of minced meat infused with pomegranate seeds, coriander and chilli.

Another popular dish is Peshwari karahi, a hot wok of tender meat, tomatoes and green chillies. It’s served steaming hot and enjoyed with naan bread.

A trip to Namak Mandi Market is an adventure for your senses, with the aroma of grilled meat and exotic spices filling the air. You can definitely find namkeen tikka here too, which is a communal dish of lightly salted, smoky lamb skewers roasted over open flames. Dine Pashtun-style, sitting cross-legged on carpeted floors, sharing platters of food with locals.
