Tourist attractions
While the city is modern, its two most famous attractions are probably millions of years old. The huge monoliths of Aso Rock and Zuma Rock. Aso Rock is a massive outcrop of granite on the outskirts of the city, and its name means ‘Victorious’ in the language of the local Asokoro people. The larger Zuma Rock features on the Nigerian 100 naira note and is truly spectacular. Both rocks are worth a day trip and provide plenty of stunning photo opportunities.
Back in the city itself, you will find plenty of green spaces to enjoy including the Millennium Park, which is home to the proposed Millennium Tower and cultural centre. While you’re waiting for that to be built, we recommend a visit to the Nike Centre for Art & Culture, which is also a great place to buy works of art from local artists. For some quiet contemplation, the city’s mosques are beautiful and tranquil retreats from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
One of the city’s quirkier attractions is the Currency Museum of the Central Bank of Nigeria, housed in the Central Bank building. It’s small, but it’s worth seeking out and exploring.

Leisure activities
Trekking is definitely top of the list of things to do in Abuja, and organised tours of the Aso and Zuma Rocks are must-dos for any tourist. Nigeria has a thriving safari industry and you can get out and about on tours that will take you to locations where you have a chance to see the local wildlife in its natural environment.
Back in the city itself, you can spend time exploring the five parks that act as the city’s green spaces, or head to one of the city’s cinemas to catch a film after an evening meal in one of its many restaurants.

Food
For the best restaurants in the capital head to the Wuse II area of the city. Here you’ll find both European and African restaurants selling a wide variety of food. You will also find some very good Indian restaurants in the city, the most popular of which is Wakkis, where traditional Indian food is cooked on open fires and in a charcoal pit for a distinctively Indian flavour.
If you want to try authentic Nigerian food then look out for dishes like suya kebabs, gbegiri (bean) soup, and the ever-popular snack, puff-puff, which is the Nigerian version of a fried doughnut. Nigerian food tends to be quite spicy and there’s liberal use of pepper and chillies especially in the soups and stews. Vegetarians are well catered for in the city, with some excellent vegetarian and vegan restaurants on offer, and more opening all the time. To wash everything down, non-alcoholic malt drinks are very popular and refreshing.

Shopping
Art is important in Nigeria, and you will find galleries throughout the city selling work by leading local artists. And if you would like something a little more traditional, the city’s Arts & Crafts market is the place to head. Look out for wooden carvings, which are traditional in this part of Africa, as well as artworks and leathercrafts. There are modern malls and shops to explore in the city centre, where you can find plenty of mementos of your trip to this unusual and interesting African capital city.
