Travel to Adana and you’ll be stepping into a city with 8,000 years of history. With such a pedigree, you’re bound to come across ancient monuments as you wander through the narrow streets of the Old Quarter. One of the most imposing buildings in the city is the Sabancı Merkez Camii mosque, which sits on the left bank of the Seyhan River. This is one of the largest mosques in the Middle East, and is a tranquil and spiritual place – the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The city is filled with mosques, and the stunning Ulu Cami mosque is one of the oldest. It dates to the 16^th century, and is famous for its bold black and white marble designs and intricately carved window frames.

Head even further back in time and you’ll find the Romans left their mark in this city too. The Roman stone bridge over the river Seyhan is believed to date back to the time of Emperor Hadrian. It originally had 21 arches, although seven of these are now submerged. It’s remarkably well preserved, and served the city as a busy traffic route over the river right up until 2007.

If you love history then pay a visit to the city’s Archaeology Museum, which is particularly well- known for its collection of ancient Roman statues.

The locals spend their evenings at the lake, one of the city’s many open spaces. This charming spot is perfect for an evening walk or an afternoon picnic, and offers welcome relief from the heat of the city. Other natural spots nearby are the Akyatan lagoon, and the magnificent Kabuzbasi waterfall, a natural wonder with falls that plummet 75m into a ravine. The area is ideal if you love hiking and mountaineering. Here you’ll find many shops that sell hand-crafted jewellery, finely painted ceramics and many more examples of local handicrafts, all at reasonable prices.
