Tourist attractions
You simply cannot fly to Dubrovnik without walking the walls that surround the old town. They are among the finest anywhere in the world, measuring a total of 1,940-metres-long, featuring five forts, and 16 towers and bastions. Take the walk at your own pace and soak up the spectacular views over the terracotta roofs. You will find a handful of cafés at the end closest to the harbour if you fancy a break.
The Rector’s Palace was built in the late 15th century, as the home of the city’s elected leader. Today this Gothic-style building houses a cultural museum, and the wigs and robes of the former leaders’ aids are now on display here. Look out for the clocks on the walls, which are set to 5.45pm –the time when Napoleon's troops stormed the city in 1806.
The Franciscan Monastery and Old Pharmacy Museum are located next to the Pile Gate. Step inside and take a peek at one of the oldest pharmacies in the world, brimming with old jars and curios. It is still in action today and you can see locals popping in to pick up their prescriptions, while tourists browse the antiquities. There is also a museum where you can see old artefacts from the pharmacy, along with medieval artworks and manuscripts.

Leisure activities
Hop aboard the iconic cable car to the top of Mount Srđ and you will be rewarded with dramatic views over the city, Lokrum island and the coastline. It leaves from just north of the city walls and is a fast ride to the summit, arriving in just a few minutes. As well as phenomenal views, there is also a restaurant and a museum at the top.
A 15-minute boat ride from the old town will whisk you away to little Lokrum Island. Wind your way through the pine trees to find sunbathing and swimming spots. The island is only small, but it is also home to a botanic garden and an old Benedictine monastery.
Dubrovnik has several beaches. Most of them are pebbly, including Banje Beach in the heart of the Old Town. Sunbathing and water sports are on offer here, plus there are lots of bars and cafés within easy reach. If you are after sandy shores, the islands are the place to go; Lopud and Mljet have plenty of secluded spots.

Food
Fresh fish and seafood are in abundance in Dubrovnik, and it is among the finest anywhere in the Adriatic region. The waters around Mljet and the Elaphite Islands provide a wealth of squid, lobster and shellfish, and the riches of the sea grace the menus of many eateries in the city. You will find some of the best fish dishes at Proto, one of the longest-running seafood restaurants in Dubrovnik, and Lokanda Peskarija, a budget-friendly option down on the harbour.
Look out for Šporki makaruli too, which translates as ‘dirty macaroni’, this is a rich pasta dish smothered in a meat and tomato sauce. Poklisar, a family-run restaurant in the city, is a great place to give it a try. If you have a sweet tooth, look out for Stonska torta, made from makaruli (macaroni), walnuts and chocolate. There is also rozata (rožata), which is a vanilla custard dessert similar to crème caramel.

Shopping
The Old Town is home to an array of small independent shops; look out for the artisans and producers who showcase their wares during the busy summer months. Be sure to head down the side streets in search of authentic souvenirs at wallet-friendly prices.
The markets are a local favourite in Dubrovnik. There is a morning market in Gundulic Square, in the heart of the Old Town, every Monday to Saturday.
