A trip to Indianapolis wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Landmark for Peace, one of the city’s most important spots. Located at 17th and Broadway, this was erected to commemorate Dr Martin Luther King.

Museums tend to be the monopoly of adults. However, if you’re travelling to Indianapolis with little ones then be sure to take them to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The largest children’s museum in the world, it offers a huge range of interactive exhibits, including a planetarium and a Dinosphere. If your children are more interested in natural history, the Indianapolis Zoo is a great way to spend a day and younger visitors can enjoy a variety of encounters, including the opportunity to touch a shark.

If you’ve a sports fan in your number, then be sure to set aside some time to watch a game of American Football at the Lucas Oil Stadium where you can see the Indianapolis Colts. Even if you’re visiting off-season, there are tours of the 63,000-seater stadium, giving you the opportunity to see behind the scenes.  During the winter and spring, you can watch the Indiana Pacers play in the National Basketball League at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Indiana Avenue is an important cultural attraction in the city and makes for a fascinating walk. Along the avenue, you’ll find a number of artistic and cultural exhibitions, celebrating Indy’s strong African-American culture. Look out for the Walker Theatre, the Stutz Art Gallery and a unique art installation, known as Jammin’ on the Alley. This is a collage created from brass instruments, including trumpets, trombones and saxophones.

The Indiana Repertory Theatre could well be a highlight on your trip to Indianapolis. Situated in a beautiful, historic building, you’ll get the chance to see some of the biggest Broadway shows, alongside American classics and spectacular musicals. Alternatively, the Phoenix Theatre offers smaller productions, in more intimate surroundings, allowing you to see some of the USA’s rising stars at close quarters.

If you prefer your cultural experiences to be a little more sedate, the Indianapolis Museum of Art houses an extensive collection of modern works, alongside African and fine art. In addition, you’ll find beautiful gardens to enjoy and various artistic activities you can take part in.

If you decided to travel to Indianapolis in search of great food then you won’t be disappointed. Most restaurants are located in the downtown area and you can enjoy fast food and fine-dining experiences from virtually every corner of the globe.

However, if you want to eat like the locals do, then hunt out diners or restaurants that serve dishes such as corn on the cob, which the locals consider to be the best in the world. Indiana is right in the heart of the American Midwest, so be sure to try the popular dish of steak and potatoes if you’re hungry.

Given the city’s proximity to the sea, fresh seafood is available in abundance. Look out for oyster stew and scalloped oysters, which are a local favourite. However, if you have a sweet tooth then Persimmon Pie is a traditional dessert, often served with ice-cream or whipped cream.

A shopping trip to Indianapolis is an eclectic and exciting experience. You’ll find everything from sprawling malls bursting with high-end and designer goods to bustling markets and a huge number of antique shops.
