San Antonio is one of Texas’s top destinations for tourists, and during the course of your trip to San Antonio you’ll discover that the city has plenty of Old World charm as well as a rich and fascinating history. 

One of history’s, and certainly America’s, most notorious battles was fought at the Alamo, a building which is open to tourists and is a virtual secular pilgrimage destination for Texans in particular. It was originally built in 1718 but became famous at the time of the Texan revolution.

San Antonio Zoo is one of the biggest and most impressive zoos in the States, home to almost 4,000 animals and hugely popular with kids and adults alike.

Two big attractions here can be found conveniently under the one roof. Ripley’s Believe or Not and the Plaza Museum feature eight galleries with odd, wonderful and downright weird displays, and the Plaza Wax Museum has replicas of many historic figures to ogle.

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is built around several old Spanish missions dating back to the 17th century, now open to the public and full of interesting walks and exhibits.

Located a short distance outside of the city, the Cascade Caverns offer a cool escape from the blistering heat of summer below the Texas Hill Country. It’s the only place you’ll find an underground waterfall that stands at 100 feet tall.

On a trip to San Antonio, history buffs will be interested to visit La Villita, one of the original small settlements here. Stroll around the numerous artisan studios, gift shops and restaurants whilst admiring the quaint old architecture.

The kids will love Sea World San Antonio with its adventure camps, displays and thrilling rides. There’s also a great water park here, and plenty of places to enjoy lunch or a snack.

The San Antonio River is best experienced on a Riverwalk outing, which can either be on foot along the bank sides or on the river itself. Numerous shops and restaurants line the river and there are lots of stops by boat along the way.

The diners, restaurants and cantinas of San Antonio serve up some of the best varieties of imported mixes in the States. From German to Italian and Mexican to Peruvian, you’ll find it all here, spread right across town.

Slow-smoked beef brisket is one of San Antonio’s top specialties, eaten in a Tex-Mex atmosphere characterised by colourful bands of mariachis and ceilings of piñatas and tinsel.

Pizza is also very popular, and some of the best Neapolitan-style pizza makers run fabulous establishments in San Antonio. If you love hot food, try the Peruvian hot peppers and Mexican corn fungus toppings.

Visitors travelling to San Antonio with some serious shopping in mind will find many different choices at their fingertips. Many of the malls specialise in upmarket designer labels but are also home to restaurants, cinemas and other entertainment options. 

In the suburbs of San Antonio you’ll find more independent outlets that sell everything from discount clothes to arts and crafts and antiques, and you can pick up some real bargains in the flea markets.
