Tokyo: Unveiling tradition in a futuristic metropolis

Book your visit to Tokyo

Fly to the futuristic and eclectic capital of Japan, via Haneda Airport located close to Tokyo city. The busy streets are alive with neon lights, modern buildings and eye-catching shopfronts stocked with unique Japanese innovation. In the midst of the hustle and bustle are the traditional parts of town, filled with street markets and ornate buildings.

Eat your way through the city or explore Tokyo’s exciting shopping and art scene. The changing seasons bring beauty and a charming atmosphere – from the soft pink hues of cherry blossoms in the spring to the rich amber colours of autumn leaves. Whether you are drawn to the city’s electric vibe, its culinary wonders, or rich traditions woven into daily life – Tokyo is a city that will leave you captivated.

Things to do in Tokyo

Visit Tokyo’s oldest temple, Sensō-ji. Walk through the grand Kaminarimon Gate where the scents and sights take you back in time. Explore the adjoining Nakamise Street for unique souvenirs and local snacks.

Soak in the city’s skyline from the top of the Tokyo Skytree, an architectural marvel. Alternatively, head to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building’s observatory in Shinjuku, where entry is complimentary. A short metro ride away is Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. The largest park in the city, it offers an oasis of tranquillity with its green space. Visit in the spring for cherry blossoms, famously known as sakura.

Take a glimpse into Tokyo’s history at the Imperial Place. Officially the residence of the Emperor of Japan, you can explore its parks and admire the ancient moats.

Activities in Tokyo

Embrace the local way of life at Yoyogi Park. Featuring wide lawns, ponds and forested areas, it’s perfect for jogging, picnics and various outdoor activities.

Step into the world of avant-garde style art at the Yayoi Kusama Museum. Immerse yourself in a euphoric experience with polka dots, pumpkins and infinity rooms. The bold and eccentric creations of Japan’s most famous contemporary artist will leave you in awe.

For something authentic yet thrilling, attend a sumo wrestling tournament – one of Japan’s oldest and most revered sports. Usually held six times a year, three take place in Tokyo in January, May and September.

A unique way to explore Tokyo is by go-kart. Dress up in your favourite character costume and drive through the city as if you’re in a real-life video game.

Food in Tokyo

Sample amazing sushi at the Tsukiji Outer Market. Freshly caught fish and seafood ensures the enjoyment of the best flavours and quality. Other amazing street foods are also available – fluffy Japanese omelette (tamagoyaki), ramen and locally grown fruits.

Near the West Exit of Shinjuku Station, Omoide Yokocho exudes the nostalgia of old, Show-era Japan. Its tiny eateries are known for piping hot oden (a type of Japanese one-pot dish) and yakitori (grilled chicken skewers).

Craving something sweet? Stroll down Harmonica Yokocho in Kichijoji. It’s a maze of small restaurants and snack shops serving local sweets. Popular choices include chewy mochi (rice cakes) and fish-shaped pastry called taiyaki.

For foodie-related souvenirs, go to Kappabashi Street where you can find intricately designed chopsticks, kitchen tools and more.

Shopping in Tokyo

Begin your shopping at one of the many department stores in Shinjuku. Explore luxury brands and amazing made-in-Japan goods to bring home with you.

Enjoy treasure hunting at the Oedo Antique Market. Located at the Tokyo International Forum, it’s a vibrant outdoor bazaar held on the first and third Sunday of every month. From antique samurai swords to vintage kimonos, you’re sure to find a unique souvenir.

If you love anime and manga, Nakano Broadway is not to be missed. It’s a must-visit for collectors and pop culture lovers, brimming with rare manga, action figures and memorabilia.

Inclined to enjoy laidback second-hand shopping? Head to the boho district of Shimokitazawa. The narrow streets are lined with vintage stores, offering everything from retro clothes to one-of-a-kind accessories.
