Almaty: Kazakhstan’s mountain city
Book your visit to Almaty
Nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Tian Shan mountains, Almaty is Kazakhstan’s cultural heart. Once the nation’s capital, this lively metropolis is where traditional yurt-studded landscapes meet cosmopolitan streets filled with cafés, museums, and iconic attractions.
Browse the city’s streets for a glimpse of Soviet-era architecture, take in the views from atop the city’s hills, or indulge in interesting local cuisine. Hikers venture to Almaty’s mountains for spectacular trails and adventures, and there is good reason why.
Whether you’re drawn by the allure of its colourful bazaars or the serenity of its nearby lakes and peaks, Almaty is a city that enchants every traveller who visits.

Things to do in Almaty
Ride the cable car to get your bearings and take in the sweeping views from atop Kok Tobe, the highest point in this city surrounded by mountains. It feels like you’re in a postcard. Down below in the city lies the Golden Quarter – Almaty’s most prestigious district lined with cafés, upscale boutiques and grand buildings. Spend a day or two exploring the area for a taste of the luxurious Almaty lifestyle. A short walk away stands the Ascension Cathedral, a pastel marvel built entirely of wood and with intricate frescoes.
While in the city, don’t miss the towering Golden Man Independence Monument in Republic Square – a warrior from ancient Kazakhstan, symbolising the nation’s resilience and heritage. A stroll to the Square of Kazakhstan’s national poet brings you to the Republic Palace, where cultural events and open-air performances animate the summer months.

Activities in Almaty
Visit the Central Museum, as it traces Kazakhstan’s roots back to the Silk Road. The Almaty City Museum and the Kasteyev Museum of Arts are also worth a visit, with collections that span the nation’s cultural evolution.
In the evening, let the Abey Opera and Ballet Theatre mesmerise you with performances that honour the rich heritage of Kazakh music and storytelling. For an authentic folk experience, listen to local musicians play soulful tunes of the two-stringed dombra.
Almaty’s natural beauty is right on the city’s doorstep and is well worth the adventure. Head to the Shymbulak ski resort for some winter fun. In summer, it’s perfect for mountain biking amongst its lush trails. The Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes offer the perfect backdrop of nature – ideal for scenic picnics framed by the mountains.

Food in Almaty
Explore the Green Bazaar, a foodie paradise where rows of stalls brim with Kazakh culinary wonders. Then, make your way down Zhibek Zholy Street, abundant with local eateries and cafés. The food in Kazakhstan offers plenty of unique dishes that reflect the country’s rich culture. Sample kazy, delicately smoked horsemeat with an intense flavour. Or, grab handfuls of freshly roasted nuts and dried fruits, perfect for a sweet snack.
The highlight of Kazakh cuisine is beshbarmak, the national dish and a hearty feast. Thin slices of horse meat rest on wide pasta noodles, all steeped in a meaty broth. Then there’s baursak, golden doughy balls, fried until puffy and served with kurt – tangy, dried yoghurt balls. For the bold, slurp a cup of kumis, a drink made from fermented mare’s milk – it’s a Kazakh staple.

Shopping in Almaty
There are plenty of luxury boutiques that cater to high-end shoppers in Almaty, particularly around the Golden Quarter. A visit to Esentai Mall is a must – it’s known for being one of the best malls in the city, with plenty of luxury brands on offer. If you’re looking for some traditional treasures, head to Arbat shopping street, where artists sell paintings and street vendors showcase handcrafted works.
Keep an eye out for the beautifully crafted Kazakh carpets around the city, as well as kalpak hats (called ‘Takiya’), that mirror the peaks of the surrounding mountains. More keepsakes include handmade felted items. Often made in earthy tones and adorned with folk motifs, they’ll add a touch of Kazakhstan to your home.
