Malta: A fusion of ancient and modern

Book your visit to Malta

Made up of three islands, Malta is an archipelago in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Its position between Sicily and North Africa gives it a distinctive heritage and a historically important role, resulting in a group of islands covered in historical monuments and sites. Popular for water sports such as diving, it’s also ideal as a beach destination. Its warm, welcoming ambience makes it an excellent family destination too.

Culturally diverse – with incredible ancient cities, Megalithic temples, busy markets and fine dining – Malta is a thriving holiday location that has so much to offer adventurous travellers. The islands are a dream for anyone interested in history, while beach lovers and especially surfers may have just found their new favourite place in the world.

Things to do in Malta

Malta has some great beaches, and thanks to the onshore breezes, it’s a fabulous spot for surfing and windsurfing. The clear waters around the coast also make it a diver’s dream and there are ancient wrecks to explore under the waves.

The Megalithic Temples are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and some of the oldest structures in the world. The two ancient temples of Ggantija on Gozo hint at the secrets of a lost civilization, while the temples on Malta are incredibly well preserved.

Malta has plenty of festivals throughout the year, with the Valletta Carnival in February and March being one of the best. The Malta Folk Festival celebrates the music and culture of the islands, while the Arts Festival embraces new artists and shows why the islands have inspired generations of painters and sculptors alike.

Activities in Malta

If you love tennis, you’ll love Malta. The game is hugely popular throughout the island and thanks to the warm climate, the game is played all year round. There are plenty of courts available if you want to play a few sets before breakfast.

Explore the natural beauty of the islands, especially Gozo, by hiking the coastal paths. Or sail into the Blue Lagoon, dive into the crystal-clear waters and swim with the turtles and brightly coloured fish.

History lovers can take a guided tour of the Silent City of Mdina and find out about the legendary Crusader Knights of St John.

If you’re travelling with children, a trip to the Malta National Aquarium lets them get up close to some of the island’s marine species. And for younger ones, there are play areas and parks for all ages.

Food in Malta

Although influenced by Italian and African cooking, Maltese cuisine has developed its own distinct identity. Rabbit is one of the most commonly eaten meats on the island, with fenkata (a marinated stew) eaten on special occasions.

For a quick snack, look out for small savoury pastries called pastizzi, filled with ricotta cheese or an amazingly tasty pea paste.

Fish is a cornerstone in Maltese gastronomy, reflecting the island’s close relationship with the sea. Lampuka (also known as mahi-mahi) is served either fried or in a pie. Other dishes to try are pixxispad mixwi (grilled swordfish steak cooked with lemon and olive oil) and grilled seabass with a simple seasoning.

For light snacks, a plate of cheese and locally grown olives with the local Maltese bread is simple and delicious.

Shopping in Malta

Malta offers all types of shopping experiences from open-air markets and street fairs, to premium malls and boutiques.

Monti Open Air Market in Floriana is one of the most popular for its unique crafts. Spend the day exploring Ta’ Qali Crafts Village in H’attard for handmade filigree jewellery, leather goods, and speciality Mdina glassware. If you want a unique reminder of Malta, look for delicate handmade lace.

If you love truffles and chocolates, Mosta is the place to go to browse shops selling tempting treats. For a taste of old Malta, a visit to the bustling Marsaxlokk market on a Sunday is a delightful experience.

Looking for something a little more modern? Valletta offers the cool comfort of air-conditioned malls and familiar international brands. Or, lose yourself in the delightful maze of Birkirkara’s boutiques, where the thrill of discovering vintage treasures fills the air.
