Zanzibar: Swahili island oasis

Book your visit to Zanzibar

Ready for a real reset? Zanzibar is the answer – you’ll feel like you’ve stepped right into a daydream. Picture turquoise waters, powder-white sands and palms swaying in the breeze.

What will your days look like? Probably spent lounging on beaches that look like they belong on a postcard. Let the island’s laid-back charm simply wash over you, and keep an eye out because you might spot some adorable beach turtles. As the sun sets, the beaches glow with a golden hue and the aroma of grilled seafood fills the air – yum!

But Zanzibar is more than just stunning scenery. It boasts a rich history that’s a vibrant blend of African, Arab, Indian and European influences. You’ll see this fascinating mix in the local traditions and unique architecture.

Zanzibar is much more than a getaway – it’s pure tropical bliss waiting to discovered.

Things to do in Zanzibar

Begin your sightseeing adventure in the capital, Stone Town – a living testament to the island’s multicultural past. Explore its maze-like streets, dive into the lively energy of the markets and just soak up that relaxed island vibe.

Most sites in Stone Town are all within walking distance and you can take a guided tour of the city. Delve into the regal history at the Palace Museum, where tales of former Sultans come to live. Then head to the Old Fort, a significant historical site that offers a glimpse into Zanzibar’s past. Today, it’s a vibrant cultural hub with souvenir shops selling paintings, sculptures and traditional clothes.

Top off your exploration with a touch of rock ‘n’ roll at the Freddie Mercury Museum and connect with Zanzibar’s very own legendary music icon.

Activities in Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a playground for underwater adventurers and nature enthusiast. Snorkelling here is unmatched. Dive right in to see a kaleidoscope of tropical fish and breathtaking coral gardens – an experience you won’t forget. Nungwi Beach is a great option for snorkelling and deep-sea fishing. Here you can also set sail on a traditional dhow cruise, dine in chic restaurants and stay in overwater bungalows.

Just a quick boat hop away lies Changuu Island, a sanctuary where ancient Seychelles tortoises roam freely – some are almost 200 years old. It’s an amazing opportunity to get up close with these gentle giants. For the nature lovers, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is another must-see. Spot the rare and playful colobus monkeys swinging through the trees and explore the serene beauty of the mangrove forests.

Take a day to unwind on Nakupenda Beach – an absolute gem with crystal-clear waters, powdery-white sands and a serene atmosphere that makes it the perfect escape.

Food in Zanzibar

Kick off your Zanzibar mornings the local way with a comforting cup of chai, a spiced tea infused with hints of cardamom and cinnamon – the perfect introduction to an island that specialises in spices. And speaking of which, if you’re up for a spiced-up sensory adventure, then a tour through Tangawizi Spice Farm is a must. You can touch, smell, and taste the spices that define Swahili cooking.

As evening approaches, let your nose guide you to Forodhani Market, where the tantalising scent of fish laced with sweet coconut hangs in the air. This is the place to get the best local treats like crispy potato balls, savoury samosas, and fresh seafood.

Another street food favourite is Mishkaki. This smoky barbeque-flavoured meat is grilled to perfection and served on a stick (kebab-style). Pizza anyone? Zanzibar pizza is a delicious take on a classic dish. And despite the name, it’s nothing like a traditional pizza. It’s made with a crepe-like base and filled with a variety of ingredients.

Shopping in Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s markets are the perfect place to find local treasures and souvenirs. The historic Old Slave Market is abundant with handmade trinkets, while Shimoni Market is the go-to spot for beachwear and other textiles ideal for the sunny shores.

Stone Town’s winding alleys are dotted with stalls of dazzling tanzanite jewellery – a deep-blue gemstone that is unique to East Africa. You’ll find artisans busy crafting delicate beaded necklaces and earrings that make stunning souvenirs.

Handwoven baskets are another lovely keepsake that can be found on almost every corner, along with seaweed-infused soaps, aromatic lotions and paintings.
