Leisure activities
Cycling is hugely popular in Gothenburg, and you will find it the easiest way to get around this very compact city. Rent a bike and make your way through the city’s network of cycle paths and explore the city like a local while packing in as much sightseeing as you can.
If you have children with you then a visit to Liseberg is a must. This is the largest theme park in Scandinavia and home to a traditional wooden roller coaster as well as plenty of other rides and amusements. You will also find music concerts and festivals in the park during the summer.
Tourist boats run along the city’s canals and provide a relaxing and enjoyable activity to see Gothenburg from a different perspective. Food
The cuisine is varied in Gothenburg, and you will find the greatest concentration of restaurants along Linnégatan, which is in the centre of the city and runs from Järntorget to Linnéplatsen. Here you will find reasonably priced outlets serving everything from Turkish kebab to vegetarian buffets. Local food is primarily fish-based, thanks to the city’s history as a port. If you do try the local street food then order the Swedish variation of a hot dog, which is served with mashed potato and shrimp salad.

Shopping
If shopping is part of your plan during your visit to Gothenburg, head for Nordstan. This is the main shopping area for the city and has plenty of Scandinavian and international brands on offer. For smaller, more intimate fashion boutiques, head to the Arkaden mall, or the NK shopping centre for high-end brands.
Be aware that prices in Scandinavia are high, but the quality of goods is exceptionally good. And as haggling is a rare act in Swedish shops, you will probably end up paying the price quoted on the ticket. Shop around before making a final decision, and look out for local flea and antique markets at the weekend for bargain hunting.
