Tourist attractions
The best way to see Copenhagen is on foot, and most major attractions are within walking distance. One of city’s most endearing landmarks is a sculpture of The Little Mermaid. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, Edvard Eriksen's sculpture can be seen at Copenhagen harbour.
Copenhagen’s rich history is exemplified in structures such as Kronborg Castle, just north of the city, which is a must-see. Built in the late 1500s, the castle gained fame as the home of Shakespeare's tragic prince, Hamlet. In the summer months, the castle’s grounds are host to open-air performances of the play.
Tivoli Gardens, close to the City Hall, is a popular spot for families. Take a ride on the 100-year-old roller coaster, or enjoy open-air film screenings in the summer, as well as live music every day. On Saturdays a fireworks display is held in the gardens. The fountains, lakes and picnic spots offer idyllic spots to relax. -
Leisure activities
The city is renowned for its museums, and no trip to Copenhagen would be complete without exploring the National Gallery of Denmark. Here you'll find the works of Matisse, Picasso and Rembrandt on display. The Arken Museum of Modern Art is the best place to find contemporary Scandinavian art.
For stunning views over the city, go to the observation platform of the Rundetårn (Round Tower). You should also visit the Danish Design Centre, which is the work of architect Henning Larsen.
On sunny days, Havnebadet Islands Brygge is a popular outdoor pool and beach area where you will often find local families. During cooler days, DGI-byen is an indoor leisure centre that offers excellent swimming facilities. -
Food
Danish cuisine focuses on local produce. Copenhagen has plenty of great places to experience a traditional Danish lunch. Smørrebrød, or open-faced sandwiches, are a popular choice. These are usually made with rye bread and a variety of toppings, such as seafood or eggs.
It is possible to enjoy fine dining at Michelin-star restaurants, or budget-dining on the go, in Copenhagen. Buffet restaurants are excellent for sampling local cuisine – the most unusual include herring buffet restaurants, which offer grilled herrings in a variety of marinades. For fine dining, the Inner City and Frederiksberg offer plenty of international restaurants.
Copenhagen's bakeries are the perfect place to pick up sandwiches for lunch or pastries and coffee for breakfast. -
Shopping
High-end fashion and design stores line the 1.1km Strøget, one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets. The vibe here is overtly commercial, but it is a great spot to find designer fashion and accessories.
Head for the Old City to find a range of independent boutiques. Prices are still high, but it's here you will find quirkier offerings, from home accessories and fashion to souvenirs. Nørrebro is also a great location for independent craft shops and boutiques.
The flea markets are a must-see when you travel to Copenhagen. Halmtorvet, near Central Station, offers high-quality clothing and accessories. Nørrebro flea market, which runs on Saturdays from April to October, is Denmark's longest street market. This place is a must if you’re looking for unusual souvenirs, antiques and second-hand goods.
