It is almost impossible to travel to Accra and not feel tempted to visit a beach. While all the beaches in the area are spectacular, Labadi Beach stands out from the rest. With powder-soft white sands and crystal-clear waters fringed by palm trees, this spectacular coastal spot is a tropical paradise. Visit the beach on the weekend and you are likely to see local drumming displays accompanied by traditional dancing.

Jamestown is Accra’s oldest district and attracts plenty of tourists travelling to the city. Old stone buildings lead down to the local harbour where you can see fishermen bringing in an exciting array of seafood, including bass, mackerel and flounder. The harbour is easy to find – just trust your nose and follow the delicious sent of smoking fish. If there is one thing the locals are passionate about in Accra, it is sports. Most of the beaches will play host to an impromptu football match, a game of volleyball or even a hockey match. Anyone visiting Accra with even a passing interest in sport should visit the Accra Sport Stadium and try to catch a football match. The local team is known as the Accra ‘Hearts of Oak’ and the games are exciting, passionate affairs.

If your idea of sporting activity is slightly more leisurely, be sure to hire a five-iron or two and head over to the Achimota Golf Club Golf Club. With 18 holes and a beautiful, woodland setting, the course is challenging enough to test the skills of even the most dedicated golfer. If you are new to the sport, introductory courses and lessons are on offer. However, if that is too much for you, hunt out Marvels Mini-Golf centre in Dzorwulu, - perfect for when you are visiting Accra with children.

For an authentic taste of Accra, Jamestown is peppered with street-food stalls, serving a variety of local snacks. The Accran style of eating involves you building your own buffet: pick up some Kenkey from one stall, some smoked fish from another and top it all with a spicy sauce, known as ‘Shito’, from another.

However, if you are looking for a special night out, Accra’s city centre is packed full of restaurants, with fine-dining and haute cuisine meals available from almost every corner of the globe. The city’s Cantonments Road is the epicentre of dining out.

It would be almost unthinkable to travel to Accra and not spend some time in one of the many markets. Makola Market is the biggest and the oldest, and the place to pick up some unique and quirky gifts to take back home. You can find everything from shoes and local vegetables, to traditional Ghanaian headwear and clothing. Do not be put off by the crowds, the locals enjoy meeting visitors and will go out of their way to ensure your experience is a good one.
