Book flights to Windhoek
Namibia’s capital is an ever-green sanctuary that is home to less than 500,000, giving it a friendly small-town feeling ideal for holidaymakers. Its casual pace of life adds to its charm, making it a popular tourist spot for those who want a laid-back vacation in a little-known locale.
While it also attracts its fair share of entrepreneurs, a trip to Windhoek is most often used as a starting point for safaris in the interior of the country. But spend a little time with the town itself before heading off on the hunt for Big Five game animals. It has ample charms to discover.
Book a flight to Windhoek with Qatar Airways to uncover a welcoming city that is the gateway to an African adventure.
Windhoek travel highlights
For a glimpse of the region’s legendary wildlife and scenery, head out of Windhoek, to the Daan Viljoen Game Park. Back in town, be sure to visit the Tintenpalast building; or, for some local craftwork, visit Penduka at Goreangab Dam.

Tourist attractions
The Tintenpalast building is now home to Namibia’s state parliament, and remains a fine example of post-colonial architecture. The name means “Ink Building”, which probably refers to its former role as the centre of German administration in southwest Africa.
Namibia is known for its handicrafts, with specialities in needlepoint and embroidery. Head to the not-for-profit collective of Penduka at Goreangab Dam to watch women at work, and buy a selection of crafts, including needlework, fabric creations, carvings and baskets.

Leisure activities
The region’s biggest draw is its wildlife and scenery, and one of the best places to see both is the Daan Viljoen Game Park in the Khomas Hochland, about 18 km west of the city. It features everything from antelopes to zebras, and includes more than 200 species of bird, making it an ornithologist’s paradise.
Back in the city, the Zoo Park, which was a zoo until 1962, is now a general-purpose public greenspace, perfect for picnics. If you’d like to include some education during your trip to Windhoek, then head to the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre to take classes in a wide range of subjects, including photography.
To find out more about the history and culture of the country, head to the National Museum of Namibia on Robert Mugabe Avenue, which also houses an excellent collection of rock art dating back thousands of years.
-
Food
If you’re ready to try some exotic dishes, then make your way to a region-specific restaurant for a zebra steak or ostrich kebab.
Be aware that some restaurants tend to focus on meat-based dishes, with very little emphasis on vegetarian options. However, in some of the finer establishments, you can sample a rich selection of both local and international cuisine.
Street food is plentiful and cheap, and there are also lots of street vendors selling both hot and cold drinks.
-
Shopping
The main shopping centre is Post Street Mall, a brightly coloured, eclectic collection of shops and boutiques. Here you can find everything from traditional handicrafts to tourist trinkets, boutique clothing, artwork, and spices. Head to the Old Breweries Craft Market for a larger selection of traditional African handicrafts, or visit the Namibia Craft Centre for some exquisite beadwork.
There are also plenty of camping and adventure-hiking shops throughout the city, thanks to the number of safaris operating in and around the region.
