Flying from Yangon
Yangon International Airport is Myanmar’s primary international airport, and has helped to open up the once-secretive country previously known as Burma.
This ancient country has a very modern airport, and passengers flying from Yangon with Qatar Airways will find it to be an extremely efficient and friendly departure point where the passenger experience is of primary concern to the courteous, approachable staff.
Currently undergoing extensive modernisation, it is nevertheless a well-appointed and well run airport that is popular with travellers.
Transportation and parking
Yangon is just 15km from the airport, and plentiful buses and taxis take passengers from the airport to its terminals.
There are two railway stations a short taxi ride from the airport terminals, where local trains forming part of the Yangon Circular Railway link to the city’s central station. The journey time to the city is around 40-50 minutes and fares are incredibly cheap (around a dollar).
Taxis from central Yangon take around 30 minutes, but be sure to only use authorised taxis and agree the fare (around $15) with the driver beforehand.
Arriving in Yangon
Passengers flying from Yangon with Qatar Airways depart from the International terminal. This modern, spacious and well-organised terminal has a large departures area that is well signposted with information boards.
However, be aware that security in Myanmar is very tight, so allow around two hours before your flight is due to depart to check in and to clear customs checks.
Facilities and amenities
Free Wi-Fi is available in the international terminal, but it can be a little intermittent at times. There are a number of Bureau de Changes and it is advisable to change local currency (the Burmese Kyat) before you leave the country.
ATM machines are also available. There are self-service cafés in the public areas, while the international VIP lounge has its own dining options. There are several retail outlets selling local goods, as well as Duty Free shops and travel accessories outlets.
Arriving in Rome
If you want to experience everything that Rome has to offer but want a little bit of individuality thrown into the mix, book a flight to Fiumicino with Qatar Airways and discover an often-overlooked part of this beautiful region. Originally a simple fishing village just a few miles from the historic capital, Fiumicino is today an attractive destination loved by locals and travellers in the know.
A much more tranquil and sedate pace of life lulls you into a relaxed state of mind, and if you want the vibrancy and energy of Rome then it’s only a short drive away. But there is plenty in this pretty location to keep you interested and amused.
Tourist attractions
The biggest attraction in the area is the ancient Roman settlement of Ostia Antica, the historic ancestor of the modern town. This bay area at the mouth of the Tiger river is picturesque and a haven for wildlife, making it a serene change from the usual tourist destinations.
One of the more unusual attractions is a small mud volcano that popped into existence on the Coccia di Morto roundabout in 2013! Although currently dormant, local geologists (and road cleaners) are keeping a careful eye on it just in case it becomes active again.
Shopping in Fiumicino is surprisingly good, and if you don’t want to fight through the crowds in nearby Rome then there is plenty to buy in the new Malo Moda mall or the smaller boutiques in the town itself. The main ingredient to any trip to Fiumicino is relaxation – a visit to this location is a welcome change from the frenetic pace of life in nearby Rome.
Travel Considerations
