Jakarta: A cultural melting pot

Book your visit to Jakarta

Jakarta is a modern-day metropolis that’s also rich in cultural heritage.

As Indonesia’s bustling capital, Jakarta has a skyline of towering skyscrapers that contrast with historical landmarks. The streets are alive with constant movement and excitement, with plenty of hidden pockets of tranquility.

This city is a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, reflected in its diverse culinary scene, vibrant festivals and eclectic arts.

Whether you’re exploring its luxurious malls, historical sites or local markets, Jakarta provides an exciting and varied experience for all types of travellers.

Things to do in Jakarta

Jakarta is known as the cultural hub of Indonesia – and for good reason. It’s bursting with cultural sites and noteworthy museums to visit.

The first stop on your itinerary is Monas – the National Monument. It’s a towering symbol of Indonesia’s independence which houses the National History Museum depicting the nation’s journey to freedom. Ascend to the top on a clear day for spectacular views of the city below.

Continue your cultural tour by delving into the city’s colonial past at the Jakarta History Museum. Then, admire the artistry and tradition of kites at the Kite Museum. If art is more your thing, visit the National Gallery, home to national and international pieces.

Last but not least is Taman Mini Indonesia Indah. This park showcases the heritage of Indonesia’s numerous regions with its display of traditional houses and artistic performances.

Activities in Jakarta

Jakarta is a lively city with plenty of activities for all kinds of travellers.

Merdeka Square is a good starting point, with the National Monument, pretty water features and sprawling green areas to explore.

Then, hire an old bicycle to travel through the quaint cobbled streets of Kota Tua, the historic Old Town. Ride to Sunda Kelapa Harbour, where traditional Indonesian Phinisi sailing boats are docked. Although this port serves as a domestic cargo hub today, it evokes the maritime spirit of Jakarta’s past.

Take a day to cruise the Thousand Islands, a serene archipelago set just off Jakarta’s coast. Similar to Bali, these islands offer pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and thriving marine life.

If you are travelling with children, spend a day at Dunia Fantasi, Indonesia’s premier amusement park.

Food in Jakarta

Whether you are craving modern fusion or looking for classic Indonesian fare, Jakarta’s food scene is a gastronomic blend of flavours.

Scout Jalan Pasar Baru and Tanah Abang Market for traditional Indonesian cuisine. Enjoy a plate of nasi goreng – the country’s beloved fried rice or indulge in martabak – a sweet or savoury stuffed pancake. Kerak telor is another must-try dish made with glutinous rice, eggs and spices.

For a taste of authentic Indonesian-Chinese food, head to Glodok, Jakarta’s historical Chinatown. This marketplace is not only of cultural significance but is also one of the largest Chinatowns in the world. It’s famous for its iced coffee and is the only place you can find Rujak Shanghai Encim – a very rare salad of cuttlefish, greens and red sauce.

Shopping in Jakarta

The city of Jakarta is renowned for its impressive array of malls, with upscale luxury boutiques alongside budget-friendly stores.

Jakarta’s two traditional markets, Pasar Baru and Tanah Abang, are lively hubs where you can immerse yourself in the local culture and dine on street food, while finding great textiles, clothing and various goods. Bring home Indonesian hand-dyed batik in the form of a scarf or use it for home décor.

Surabaya Street, otherwise known as Jalan Surabaya, is a haven for antique enthusiasts. This charming street is lined with stalls offering a treasure trove of antiques, from vintage cameras to colonial-era homeware. For a more multifaceted shopping experience, walk around Pasar Santa, a market filled with vintage finds and new goods.
