Shanghai is China’s economic powerhouse. As well as its futuristic office blocks, the waterfront or ‘Bund’ is lined with old colonial buildings;  a captivating mix of old and new is fascinating.. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the famous pink spheres of the Shanghai Tower dominate the skyline, but nearer to ground level you’ll find the delightful Yu Garden and the Jade Buddha Temple, colourful and exotic relics of a very different world.

Flying from Algiers

Algiers International Airport, also known as Houari Boumediene Airport, is one of the busiest airports in north Africa and Algeria’s main international air transport hub. The airport is located around 17 kilometres southeast of the city, making it convenient for business travellers and tourists alike. The airport is an excellent starting point for your journey when you fly from Algiers with Qatar Airways.

Transportation and parking

Transport from the centre of Algiers is easy, with plenty of buses and taxis available from all parts of the city. The N11 coastal road leads straight to the airport and offers a very scenic drive, while buses take approximately 30 minutes from the centre of the city to drop off points outside the main terminal buildings. Taxis can be booked ahead by your hotel concierge (and in fact this is advisable rather than hailing a cab at the roadside). The journey takes around 25 minutes, depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. Allow a little extra time if you are travelling to the airport during morning and evening rush hours. Parking at the airport is available, with both short and long-term car parks close to the terminals, including 5,000 spaces next to the International terminal.

Arriving at the airport

Passengers flying from Algiers with Qatar Airways depart from Terminal 1, Hall 1. The large Departure area has 16 passenger gates, so navigating your way around is quite easy. However, security is exceptionally tight at Algiers International Airport, so allow at least two hours before your flight is due to board to clear customs and security checks. There are public lounges and several VIP private lounge areas with business facilities available.

Facilities and amenities

A plentiful choice of food and shopping makes Algiers International Airport very popular with travellers, and there is a large Duty Free shop and other retail outlets throughout the terminals. Food and drink providers offer everything from three-course meals to on-the-go snacks and coffee, as well as light meals and pastries. The airport has several banking outlets and change booths, and pay-as-you-go Wi-Fi access is available in all public areas. Vouchers to access the internet can be bought from newsagents and coffee shops in the airport.

Arriving in Shanghai

There’s one word that describes Shanghai – huge. Home to more than 23million people, this vast city is the largest in mainland China and one of the world’s most prosperous metropolitan areas, making it a magnet for business travellers, investors and entrepreneurs. The sheer scale of Shanghai can leave you breathless, but if you plan your journey carefully before you arrive you will be able to see some of the most incredible juxtapositions between ancient and modern culture anywhere in the world.

Book a flight to Shanghai with Qatar Airways and you’ll receive the warmest of welcomes from people who embrace visitors from all over the world (Shanghai is home to more than 9 million immigrants).

Tourist attractions

Shanghai is split into two districts by the Huangpu River - Puxi and Pudong. Puxi is the older of the two, with the majority of modern Shanghai (including the business district) housed in Pudong. To escape the frenetic pace of life of the city head for the beautifully manicured Yuyuan Gardens, which is dotted with classical architecture (although you may have to struggle through the street vendors at the gates). The Bund and the French Concession transports you back to 1920s Shanghai, while modern architecture is well represented in and around Pudong's Lujiazui District.

One of the more unusual attractions is Zhujiajiao Water Town, a classic ‘water village’ that’s over 400 years old and with a signature five-arch bridge spanning the Cao Gang River. It’s a maze of paths and bridges, and is also home to two impressive temples.

Other temples throughout the city that are well worth adding to your itinerary include the Jade Buddha Temple, Jing'an Temple, Chenghuang and Longhua Temple. To catch a truly breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city head up to the observation point on the Oriental Pearl Tower. To learn more about the history and culture of Shanghai dating back to the Bronze Age, pay a visit to the well-run Shanghai Museum.

Travel Considerations

Flights to Shanghai with Qatar Airways land at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
