Berlin is one of Europe’s great historic cities, with a multicultural population and some of the best visitor attractions in Germany. The massive Brandenburg Gate is the symbol of Germany’s reunification, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall are reminders of the Cold War in Europe when Berlin was a divided city. You’ll find many of the best cultural venues on Museum Island, including the city’s National Gallery and Old Museum. As a break from sightseeing, enjoy tea or coffee under the lime trees of the famous Unter den Linden Avenue
Arriving in Tegel, Berlin
One of Berlin’s 96 districts, Tegel is best known as the location for Berlin’s main international airport. Flights to Berlin with Qatar Airways arrive here, opening up the heart of Germany to visitors.
Journey a little further into Berlin and you’ll quickly discover that this city is a patchwork of individual districts, each with their own very distinctive personality. While Tegel is relatively relaxed and laid back, the centre of Berlin is vibrant and energetic, with a wealth of cultural entertainment, unique attractions and a very warm German welcome.
Tourist attractions
In Tegel itself you’ll find the rather fine Tegel Palace (also known as Humboldt Palace), originally a 16th century hunting lodge that has also gone through various transformations including some time as a sanatorium. Tegel has plenty of natural beauty of its own too, including Lake Tegel and Berlin’s oldest tree, the wonderfully named ‘Fat Maria’.
Once you head a little further into Berlin itself you have a greater selection of monuments and attractions to explore. From the iconic Brandenburg Gate in the centre of the city, to the poignant Berlin Wall memorial, Berlin is awash with modern and classical attractions.
It also has a huge number of museums and galleries, with the Pergamon-Museum, Altes Museum and the Bode-Museum all clustered in one small area. Another group of museums and cultural buildings can be found at Kulturforum, close to Potsdamer Platz. Because there are so many excellent museums in the city, the best way to get the most from your trip is to buy a museum pass, which will give you access to most of them.
