Geneva has a wonderfully scenic and peaceful location at the tip of Lake Geneva. With the Jura Mountains and the Alps as the city’s backdrop, you don’t get much more picture-perfect than this. Arriving in Geneva

One of the centres of world diplomacy and finance, Geneva is Switzerland’s second most-populous city. Clean, efficient and full of Gothic charm, this city in the mountains has the remarkable Lake Geneva and the Alps as a magnificent backdrop, making it a particular favourite with lovers of the Great Outdoors.

During the winter the city is a stopping point on the way to the high Alpine ski slopes, while during the summer it offers a rich selection of arts and culture.

Book a flight to Geneva with Qatar Airways and discover a remarkably friendly city that welcomes both leisure and business visitors.

Tourist attractions

Geneva’s greatest assets are its natural ones – the plentiful activities available on Lake Geneva are an attraction in themselves. Within the city there are lots of interesting buildings, museums and landmarks to explore.

The Jet d'Eau is a remarkable landmark, where a column of water is pumped an incredible 140m into the air. It’s beautifully lit up at night but don’t get too close – the area for half a kilometre around the feature is permanently wet!

The Old Town is worth exploring for an afternoon (be advised that it is on quite a steep incline so people with reduced mobility may find it difficult).

Within this old quarter you will find Rousseau's birth house and various antique shops to browse.

Geneva is well known for its excellent museums, including the Musée d'Art Moderne et Contemporain, which houses an outstanding collection of modern art, the family-friendly Musée d'Histoire Naturelle and the excellent Fondation Baur, Musée des Arts d’Extrême-Orient, which has the largest collection of ceramics in the country.

Geneva also has a number of art galleries that are well worth visiting, stocking modern Swiss painters and contemporary works of art.

Flying from Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai International Airport is Thailand’s fourth busiest airport and the gateway to northern Thailand. Chiang Mai is a growing commercial centre too, and many passengers flying from Chiang Mai with Qatar Airways are business travellers, who expect a premium-quality service and a warm welcome at the start of their journey. Professional, highly trained staff at Chiang Mai are here to help you in every way they can, to make the start of your trip as comfortable and as stress-free as possible.

Transportation and parking

Transport to and from the airport is quick, easy and convenient, and the best way to get there is by using the red song-taews (passenger trucks), which run all over the city. However, if you have a lot of luggage with you then a taxi booked by your hotel concierge may be more convenient, or hire one of the thousands of Tuck-tucks (the iconic 3-wheelers that are the main form of transport around Thailand).

Limousines and private hire cars can be arranged for VIPs and business travellers, and travel times to and from the airport are relatively short, depending on what time of day you travel.

Arriving at the airport

Passengers flying from Chiang Mai with Qatar Airways depart from the international terminal’s Departures hall, located on the second floor. Although it’s a small airport in comparison to the larger transport hubs in the south of the country, it is very efficient and well organised, making check-in easy.

Staff are on hand to help you with baggage and to direct you to the correct boarding area, but do bear in mind that security checks are tight, so you should allow around an hour and a half before your flight is due to board to clear check-in and customs checks.

Facilities and amenities

A private lounge area for First and Business Class passengers is available, while the public lounge area is spacious and well laid out with comfortable waiting areas. There are several fast food outlets for quick bites, as well as coffee shops, a larger restaurant and snack vendors throughout the terminals.

A small retail sector has a number of outlets selling Thai silks, handicrafts and souvenirs, as well as travel essentials and Duty Free. Currency exchange and ATMs are located throughout the terminals, and Wi-Fi access is available for a small fee.
