Arriving in Moscow
From the iconic domes of St Basil’s Cathedral and the drama of Red Square, Moscow is a unique city with its own very individual personality. The people of Moscow are incredibly warm and welcoming, and are particularly friendly towards visitors who come to see their city.
For 860 years this thriving metropolis has been at the heart of Russia. It is the country’s political and financial hub, as well as its commercial centre. Book a flight to Moscow with Qatar Airways and you’ll find that it’s also a popular tourist destination, full of photogenic architecture, fascinating museums and galleries, and a thriving arts scene that includes world-famous dance and ballet companies.
Tourist attractions
The vast majority of visitors head straight for Red Square, at the very heart of the city. This huge square is also home to St Basil’s Cathedral with its brightly painted ‘onion’ domes, the State History Museum, Lenin's Mausoleum and one of the Kremlin's imposing brick walls.
Inside the Kremlin you’ll find a wealth (quite literally) of attractions, including the famous Diamond collection in the armoury, some stunning architecture and matinee ballet performances in the Conference Centre.
If you need somewhere to rest for a moment, the Kremlin’s gardens are beautifully tranquil oases of calm in the middle of a noisy and busy city. If you want to discover the spirit of Moscow then take a stroll down Old Arbat Street, with its boutiques and street traders.
Art is hugely important to the Russian people, and one of the best collections can be found at The Institute of Russian Realist Art, with a stunning display of the country’s finest realist artists. For a glimpse of modern Moscow, head to the revived Gorky Park, now home to trendy cafés, shops and an open-air cinema. And for a little peace and tranquillity take a stroll around Park Sokolniki, or the lesser known Aptekarskiy ogorod park.
