Sydney is one of the biggest cities in Australia and is the capital of New South Wales. The harbour front is dominated by the great white sails of the Sydney Opera House, and most of the social life here takes place in and around the two waterfront areas of Massive Darling Harbour and the Circular Quay port. This is where you’ll find some of the best seafood restaurants, and enjoy fine dining with views across the water on balmy evenings. Take a stroll in the highly regarded Royal Botanic Garden, and enjoy panoramic views across the city from the top of Sydney Tower.
Flying from Rome
Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport is the larger of two key airports serving Rome and the surrounding region. Its location close to the Italian capital makes this an important international air hub, yet it manages to maintain a friendly and relaxed atmosphere that focuses on creating a pleasant environment for inbound and outbound travellers.
Passengers flying from Fiumicino with Qatar Airways will find the airport to be well organised, efficient and spacious, with excellent facilities, particularly its very good coffee vendors and luxury leather good outlets.
Transportation and parking
The Leonardo Express train service runs every 30 minutes to and from Rome's Termini railway station, and takes approximately 35 minutes, making it the quickest and most direct route from the centre of Rome to the airport.
FL1 local trains also run to the airport regularly. If you are planning to travel by taxi then do allow extra time for your journey, due to Rome’s legendary traffic congestion, and only take a white, licensed and metred taxi and not the unofficial taxis that throng the major tourist spots and hotels.
Arriving at Fiumicino
Passengers flying from Fiumicino with Qatar Airways depart from Terminal 3. Be aware that due to a serious fire in May 2015, some parts of the terminal are currently being repaired. However, all check-in desks are currently operational. Allow approximately two hours from the scheduled departure time of your flight to check in and clear security.
Facilities and amenities
There are several lounges for the use of passengers, including VIP lounges for First Class and Business Class travellers. Business users also have access to meeting rooms, office space and business services in Terminal 1.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport, and there is full accessibility for disabled passengers, including a specially adapted lounge that can accommodate wheelchair users.
A good choice of retail outlets provide a selection of high quality goods (look out in particular for some excellent leather goods and accessories), and a food hall provides everything from light snacks and refreshments to exceptionally good Italian and international cuisine.
Arriving in Sydney
Despite what most people think, Sydney is not actually Australia’s capital, but is probably its most iconic and instantly recognisable one, thanks to exceptional monuments such as the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.
Modern, thriving and continually expanding, Sydney is the powerhouse of Australia and one of the most vibrant cities on the Pacific Rim.
Book a flight to Sydney with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover that it’s also a centre for the arts, music and theatre, with an incredibly relaxed and laid-back atmosphere for such a large metropolis.
Warm and friendly people welcome visitors with open arms, and its business sector is innovative and progressive, making it an excellent destination for business travellers too.
Tourist attractions
Top of the list has to be the Sydney Opera House. It sits on Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and adjacent to the Sydney central business district and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
It is in fact a collection of venues that host 1,500 performances every year, attracting over a million visitors from around the world. From opera to modern dance, theatre to mime, this is the cultural heart of the city.
Many of the city’s landmarks are clustered around the harbour, and an excellent and very relaxing way to see them is to take a ferry east from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo or Manly, or west under the Harbour Bridge towards Parramatta.
This will also give you a great view of the harbour itself.
The city is famous for its museums, and visitors can choose from the Australian Museum, which has extensive exhibits covering Australia’s unique flora and fauna, through to the interactive Powerhouse Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
To find out more about Australia’s First Nation people, head to the Royal National Park where you’ll find Aboriginal rock carvings, or take a guided interpretative walk at Berry Island.
