Flying from Sydney

Australia’s best-known city is not actually its capital, but the harbour-side metropolis of Sydney.

This location is full of iconic buildings and landmarks, and is served by one of the largest airports in the country, Sydney (Kingsford Smith) Airport. Just 8km from the city centre, it is also the oldest international airport in the world, and passengers flying from Sydney with Qatar Airways will find it to be a friendly, relaxed yet extremely efficient departure point. Staff are polite and helpful, and the facilities at this extensive airport are excellent.

Transportation and parking

Its close proximity to the centre of Sydney means that there is plenty of transport available to and from the heart of the city to the airport itself. The Airport Link rail service connects the three terminals to Sydney Central Station and takes just under half an hour. Terminal 1 has its own railway station, while Terminals 2 and 3 share a station.

Sydney buses run to and from the terminals and take around 40-45 minutes, depending on the time of day and traffic conditions. Taxis are plentiful, and the journey time from the centre to the airport is around 30 minutes. Parking at the airport is plentiful, and there are four car parks to choose from.

The International Car Park is located opposite Terminal 1 and provides short and long-term stays. Other car parks are designed for domestic and short-term visitors. Valet parking is available.

Arriving in Sydney

Passengers flying from Sydney with Qatar Airways depart from Terminal 1. The terminal is particularly large, so ensure that you check the departure boards on arrival for your gate number. Recently, security at Sydney Airport has been tightened, so allow extra time to check in and to clear customs and security checks.

Facilities and amenities

Communications facilities are excellent, with free Wi-Fi available throughout Terminals 1 and 2. Internet kiosks are also located both pre and post-security, and mobile telephone hire is available from several vendors in the arrivals area of Terminal 1. There are more than 150 shops and retail outlets at the airport, with a huge selection of luxury and designer goods, tourist souvenirs and Duty Free.

The food court offers a broad choice of both on-the-go fast food and more formal dining options, with plenty of beverages and snack vendors to sample too.

Arriving in Tehran

Tehran is opening up to tourists, allowing much greater access to this rich, fascinating and ancient capital at last. Book a flight to Tehran with Qatar Airways and the first thing you’ll notice about this lively and friendly city is the extraordinary mountain backdrop.

The towering, snow-capped Alborz Mountains dominate the landscape, providing wonderful hiking and trekking opportunities for the more adventurous traveller.

Back in Tehran you’ll find a fascinating fusion of ancient and modern – towering monuments and beautiful mosques, bustling markets and gleaming skyscrapers.

The welcome you’ll receive in Tehran is warm and friendly, and this unexpected tourist destination is now becoming a favourite among more discerning travellers who want to head off the beaten path and experience the real Persia.

Tourist attractions

Tehran’s mountain backdrop is echoed by its own towering monuments in the centre of the city, the most famous of which is the Azadi Tower. Built to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire, it’s a fusion of Sassanid and Islamic architecture.

A museum in the base of the tower gives visitors a potted history of the Empire, as well as the history of the tower itself.

The tomb of: ‘Abdul ‘Adhīm ibn ‘Abdillāh al-Hasanī is a place of pilgrimage for many. The Shah-Abdol-Azim shrine is dedicated to the descendant of Hasan ibn ‘Alī. He was also a companion of Muhammad al-Taqī, and was buried at the shrine in the 9th century.

The Treasury of the National Jewels is an astonishing collection of jewellery and the largest of its kind in the world. The glistening collection includes the Darya-e-Noor diamond, the sister diamond to the Kuh-e-Noor diamond, the world's largest uncut ruby and a free standing golden globe made from 34 kilograms of gold and no fewer than 51,366 precious stones.
