Arriving in Thiruvananthapuram
Also known by its full name of Thiruvananthapuram, this bustling location is the capital city of Kerala in Southern India, and is rapidly becoming a popular destination with more adventurous travellers. Referred to by Mahatma Gandhi as the "Evergreen city of India", it is also a commercial centre with a strong emphasis on high-tech industries, making it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs and investors.
Book a flight to Trivandrum with Qatar Airways and you’ll also find it to be a city filled with history and culture, that welcomes visitors with genuine warmth and friendliness. It has the benefit of being by the shores of the Arabian Sea, but also has plenty to see and do within its city walls too.
Tourist attractions
Trivandrum is an historic city filled with historical buildings, parks, museums, and palaces. It is also an incredibly green city with plenty of parks and open spaces that offer a welcome respite from the noise and frantic pace of life. Top of the itinerary should be the Sree Anantha Padmanabha Temple, around which the city was built. The temple is stunning and expansive, with a 500-pillared corridor and a labyrinth of rooms, courtyards and gardens. It is famous for its sculptures and large collection of temple mural paintings. In the grounds is a beautifully tranquil pond called Padmatheertham, and the garden is lined with palm trees.
The East Fort (or what remains of it) is centred around Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple. In the evenings it is brightly illuminated with coloured lights, making it a dazzling and very photogenic spectacle.
The Napier Museum is the museum of choice to find out more about the history and culture of the region, while directly opposite is the Keralan Museum – an interactive experience that presents a history of Kerala through the ages. And for something a little more unusual seek out the Indian Coffee House at Thampanoor, a distinctive spiral-shaped brick structure designed by famous architect Laurie Baker and adjacent to the central bus station and the Central Railway Station.
