Description :

A CRD-Child Restraint Device is a hard-backed child safety seat that is approved by the government for use in both motor vehicles and a commercial aircraft.

This is used during the flight for children/infants for whom an aircraft seat has been purchased at the applicable child fare.

The Child restraint Device provided by Qatar Airways is designed to comfortably seat infants up to 20 pounds (9 Kgs) and toddlers from 20 to 40 pounds

(9kgs to 18kgs) or 40 inches (102 cms) in height.

Child Restraining Device Criteria :

Qatar Airways accepts customer requests for Child Restraint Devices (CRDs) and approved Car Seats on-board its aircraft. These safety devices are fixed on a normal aircraft seat for use during the flight for children and infants for whom an aircraft seat has been purchased at appropriate child fare.

• Car seat to be used on board the aircraft must have approved labels. When an approved car seat is labelled or marked by the manufacturer, it certifies the car seat meets a set of safety standards (FMVSS No.213, the standards of a foreign Government, the standards of the United Nations or approval by the FAA, JAA Authority, or Transport Canada through a Type of Certificate (TC), Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), Technical Standard Order (TSO), or under 14 CFR 21.305(d).
  Car seats approved for use in motor vehicles in accordance with UN Standard ECE R 44-03 or later series of amendments. The car seat must have a label indicating it was manufacured under United Nations Standards.
• Car Seats to be used in an aircraft which is in accordance with German Qualification Procedure for CRD systems for use in an aircraft (TUV Doc TUV/958-01/2001)

The two types of safety restraint devices can be differentiated as follows:

a) Child Restraint Device (CRD) – provided by Qatar Airways upon receiving customer request at the time of reservation;
b) Car Seat – brought on-board by customers as their personal property. QR allows customers to bring their own car seats however, these must meet safety requirements.

• Request for CRD has to be made minimum 48 hours prior to the flight. QR Reservation Office will confirm if the CRD can be arranged or not.
• CRD may be used for the carriage and restraint of children over 2 years of age who occupy a normal passenger seat.  CRD is designed to safely and comfortably seat children weighing from 20 – 40 pounds (9.05 KG to 18.10 KG) or 40 inches (101.6 CMs.) height.
• In case of two infants travelling with one accompanying adult, the  second infant must be over 12 months and able to sit in a separate seat. For the infant (over 12 months) who will be seated on a separate seat, a CRD must be provided and used. In such cases, passenger may use a personal car seat (substitute of CRD).

Qatar Airways accepts approved car seats on-board its aircraft.  

Operating rules require the car seat used on an aircraft during ground movement, take-off, and landing must bear labels or markings to indicate to the aircraft operator that the car seat meets safety standards.

Acceptance Criteria

Car seat must adhere to the following criteria, in order to be approved for acceptance on the flight:

• Car seat on board Qatar Airways aircraft will be allowed to be used for infants and children who are in the age group from 6 months to 36 Months only.
• The accompanying passenger must be 18 years and above, he/she must be made aware of the responsibility to check the compliance and installation of it on the aircraft seat.
• The accompanying adult must be provided adjacent seat to the passenger using car seat on board the aircraft.
• The car seat  should have a solid back and seat with internal restraint straps installed to securely hold the child.
• The car seat must be in good condition to use on board an aircraft free from any damage to the unit or its point restraint system.
• Car seat to be used on board the aircraft must have approved labels. When an approved car seat is labelled or marked by the manufacturer, it certifies the car seat meets a set of safety standards.
• In situations when a parent / guardian presents an approved car seat to be used on the aircraft with a label or mark by the manufacturer that has worn off or is illegible/unreadable, the passenger must furnish a letter or document from the manufacturer that specifically ties the car seat (through a detailed description or specific make & model number) to approve its use on the aircraft.
• If the car seat does not have an approved label, or documentation from manufacturer in case of worn off, illegible label and if the below mentioned criteria are not met then it shall be accepted as checked baggage.
• It is the sole responsibility of the ground staff to check and ensure that all the acceptance criteria pertaining to car seat are met. Ground staff remains to be the final decision maker for acceptance.

Important CRD information :

Only an adult (18 years and above) is permitted to carry one infant under two years of age without a seat (INF). However, there might be requests when two infants are required to accompany the adult then under such circumstances, the second infant must be over 12 months and should be able to sit upright in a separate seat (Booked & ticketed as INS- Infant with a seat). In case both infants are less than 12 months old then they need to be accompanied by a second adult passenger.

Qatar Airways shall endeavour to provide a CRD (Child Restraint Device) if the request is made a minimum 48 hours prior to fight departure.

For those customers that travel with their own child restraint device ( PCRD) or better known as a car seat then they must be informed that the device must have an approved label from a regulatory body e.g. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). 

In both of the above scenarios, you are requested to please contact the nearest QR office or Customer Contact Centre in order to formalise such requests.  

Note: Similar requests may also apply in case one infant needs to accompany an adult and an INS ticket has been paid for.

Note**Baby stroller facility has been ceased at HIA until further notice. Hence,  branded baby strollers will not be available at HIA until further notice. 

Please be advised about the procedure of accepting infants on Qatar Airways flights.

• Infants less than 8 days old can only travel as approved MEDA case if traveling for emergency medical treatment (in incubators).
• Infant aged between 8 days and two years can travel with accompanying adult.
• Infant tickets can only be issued/purchased once infant has been born. 
• In case of two infants with one accompanying adult, first infant can travel with an accompanying adult and second infant aged over 12 months will occupy a seat  and shall be booked as infant with a seat (INS) with the applicable child fare ticket. If unable to sit on a seat with the seat belt, or if the infant is aged less than 12 months, then the 2nd infant should be accepted only with an accompanying adult over 16 years of age.
• In case of three infants with two adults, each adult shall be responsible for one infant ( 1 and 2 infant) during the entire flight. Third infant aged over 12 months will occupy a seat and shall be booked as infant with a seat (INS) with the applicable child fare ticket. If unable to sit on a seat with a seat belt or if the infant is aged less than 12 months, then the 3rd infant should be only be accepted with an accompanying adult over 16 years of age.
• Booking/ticketing details of the accompanying passenger must be provided at the time of reservation/ticketing for the third infant and both PNR’s must have TCP information.
• In connection with carriage of an infant(s), a more stricter local government regulation or other airline’s regulation (when codeshare/interline partners are involved ) shall take precedence over Qatar Airways policy.
• Please always ensure to validate DOB against the travel document and update correct DOB in PNR.
• Infant tickets can only be issued/purchased once infant has been born. 

The term “children” refers to persons over two years but less than 12 years of age.

The term “infant" refers to children less than two years of age. Infants  who are 8 days old and above will be accepted for air travel on all QR flights without any prior clearances.

QR may accept infants less than 8 days old to travel on its flights under the following circumstances:

• When the infant is required to travel on medical grounds provided QR Medical Centre approval  is obtained using a MEDIF.

• When the mother is required to travel on compassionate grounds provided a Certificate is obtained from a qualified pediatrician indicating the infant is fit to travel and necessary travel documents is available.

• Infant name  (first name, family name and DOB) that exceeds 25 characters (including space) will not be auto converted into SSR INFT information in the PNR and will result in disassociation of INFT information under Check in system.

SSR INFT has a maximum character limitation of 25 characters for last name & 25 characters for first name.

Accepted Format is as follow:

•  SSR INFT QR HK1 25 characters (including space)  /  25 characters (including space)  DDMMMYY

Note:

• 1)The limitation may vary for each GDS. The most restrictive limitation applies.
• 2)The character limitation of Name field on PNR & SSR INFT is different and should not be considered as same.

The number of infants that may accompany an adult is normally a maximum of two infants per adult provided one of the infants occupies a seat. The second infant must also be over 12 months and should be able to sit in a seat with a seat belt. The second infant can then travel at 75 %, i.e. child fare.

Three infants are acceptable with two adults if each adult looks after one infant during take-off and landing and if the third infant is over 12 months and is able to sit in a seat with seat belt. child fare of 75 % will apply to the third infant. If this is not possible, the third infant is only acceptable with an accompanying adult.

A child will always require a seat. An infant may or may not require one depending on the guardian’s requirements. When an infant does not require a seat, there is no record in the Name Element of a reservation message that he/she will be travelling.

Irrespective of any indication in the name element, when children and/or infants are travelling, information must also be included in the supplementary service element of reservations messages. For an infant enter a supplementary SSR item using the SSR code ‘INFT’,

An infant travelling at 15% fare is entitled to 10 kilos of baggage allowance as per Weight Concept. Infant baggage allowance per Piece Concept is listed below:

• INF standard baggage allowance for piece concept is 1pc with maximum weight of 23kgs (Flights to and from Argentina, Canada and USA) – across all cabins

• INF standard baggage allowance for piece concept is 1pc with maximum weight of 23kgs (Flights to and from Brazil) – on all cabins

Bassinet/Carrycot/Baby Basket

Many infants travel without occupying a customer seat. Because of this, Qatar Airways provides its passengers with the facility to use a bassinet, carrycot or baby basket located at the bulkhead for use during flight. Because the locations in an aircraft where a car seat/bassinet/carrycot/baby basket can be accommodated and the number we provide are limited, all requests for their use during a journey must be entered in the Reservations Record (PNR). This is done by assigning an appropriate seat for the parent.

When infants are occupying their own seats, indicate the number that space has been reserved for. When there are some infants occupying seats and others not, also indicate the number of infants not occupying seats.

E.g. Infant occupies a seat and the name is reflected in the name field of the reservation.

- Prior to this notification, due to system limitations it was suggested to book an infant occupying a seat as child, i.e.  with PTC code CHD , This limitation has now been resolved  and below guidelines  shall be followed  with immediate effect

When PNR is priced, system will auto code the child fare with CH indicator appended to the fare basis.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR A BABY BASSINET:

Young Solo Traveler/ Unaccompanied minor (YST/UM)

Qatar Airways has introduced a newly branded Young Solo Traveler (YST) form and process for:

• The Unaccompanied Minor (UM/UMNR) service for solo travelers between five and 11 years of age.
• Young Passengers (YP) for whom Meet and Assist Services are requested. A YP is between 12 and 15 years of age.

Important:

Before filling in the form, please have the details of the following persons at hand:

• Person seeing off the YST upon departure
• Person meeting the YST upon arrival
• Parent, legal guardian or person responsible for the YST, who must confirm that they fully understand the terms and conditions stated on the form
  

Any misleading information can result in the YST being denied boarding.

An email notification with the form attached as a pdf, will be sent to the email address added in the booking after submitting the form. 

If the customer has a confirmed booking and ticket number starting with 157, you may raise a YST request through our digital channels. To access the YST form, retrieve the customer’s booking by entering their Qatar Airways booking reference and last name.

Then, fill in and submit the form that is divided into four different sections. The first section includes details of the YST, while the remaining three sections include details of the persons listed above

Reservation, pricing and ticketing:

• Book and issue the booking reference with UMNR elements (SSR and PTC).
• Book and issue the booking reference with SK YNGP and SSR MAAS for YP.
• Apply 100% of the relevant fare and auto-priced taxes, fees, charges and surcharges.

Overview:

Current practice that is followed is to add UMNR PTC as (ID/UM10) and after pricing the fare, agent has to manually update the fare basis to add "CH" code and this is impacting fare guarantee indicator.

New Format is to add the PTC code as (U) followed by the age of the passenger.

Example: (U10) U= UMNR code & 10= Age

YP Reservation entries:

• For all GDS reservations -  Add MAAS as follows: SRMAASQR -YNGP(Passengers age)
• for QR and 1a Travel agentsin addition to the SRMAASQR-YNGP (Passenger's age)

Notes:

• All bookings must be confirmed (HK).
• Ticket numbers must start with 157 only.
• For Economy class tickets, YSTs may not be seated on the upper deck of an A380
• YSTs may only take flights operated by Qatar Airways.
• YSTs may not take flights operated by other airlines (codeshare and/or interline partners).
• Ensure that the email address of the customer is added in the booking

Escort Service

Qatar Airways offers an escort service for children travelling alone.

A cabin attendant dedicated for this purpose will accompany your child throughout the journey.

To avail this service, the age of the child has to be between 5 and 15 years (up to but not including the 16th birthday). The escort service is not offered for children under 5 years old.

Qatar Airways will charge a return fare for the airline representative who will act as an escort for your child. The request for an escort has to be made at least 72 hours prior to flight departure and applies throughout QR operated flights only.
