Algiers is an ancient city, full of attractions which are unique to this vibrant destination. Any visit should take in the maze of narrow alleyways which make up the Casbah, lined by Ottoman mansions and centred on Ketchaoua Mosque. Built in 1660 with designs inspired from Turkish architecture, the New Mosque, which sits on the waterfront, is also well worth a visit. The art collections in the Musee des Beaux Arts are the best in Algeria, and the Musee National du Moudjahid preserves artefacts from the country’s struggle against colonialism.
Arriving in Algiers
A fascinating blend of Mediterranean style and North African spirit, the Algerian capital of Algiers has been an internationally important trading post for a millennium.
Today it relies on tourism as much as it does on trade, and welcomes visitors from all over the world who come for its café culture, unique atmosphere and its Casbah. Book a flight to Algiers with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover a city with a warm welcome and an energetic, passionate approach to life.
Residents of Algiers are hospitable and generous, and both business and leisure travellers will find this to be an exceptionally friendly city. Today, modern architecture sits alongside more traditional Moorish design, blending ancient and modern into an eclectic mix of styles.
Tourist attractions
The must see attraction of Algiers has to be the city’s Casbah, Algiers’ ancient heart that captures a myriad of smells, colours and sounds into a mind-blowing cacophony of uniquely Algerian vibrancy. This part of the city dates back to the 17th century and has been declared an UNESCO World Heritage site, such is its importance.
The Notre Dame d'Afrique is an extraordinary basilica that dates back to the 19th century, but adopts a very traditional North African design. It is a stunning piece of architecture (note that photography is not allowed inside the basilica itself) and a prime example of the Neo-Byzantine style pioneered by French architect Jean Eugène Fromageau.
The truly stunning garden of Le Jardin d'Essai du Hamma is an oasis of tranquil beauty in the heart of the city. Laid out in a traditional Islamic style, this garden is beautifully maintained and offers a cool escape from the heat and noise of the city.
Other attractions in this culturally rich city include the imposing Fort Santa Cruz and the spectacular Roman ruins at both Timgad and Djemila.
