Tourist attractions
At the very centre of the city (quite literally) is the Alun-Alun Puputan square, with its huge, four-faced statue, which is supposed to defend the four cardinal points of the compass. It’s also an incredibly useful landmark if you get lost at any time.
To find out more about the history and culture of the island and its people a visit to the Bali Museum is highly recommended. It is spread across four pavilions, with the main pavilion housing a collection of ancient stone, bronze and wooden artefacts.
The southern pavilion has exhibitions of the country’s textiles, while the northern pavilion focuses on the history of Balinese performance art. The central pavilion is devoted to Balinese spirituality.
The Lapangan Puputan Margarana park is a large open space in the heart of the city. You can’t miss the huge Bajra Sandhi monument, which dominates the park.
Bali’s capital is also full of temples that are exquisitely decorated, including the Palace of Satria and the Royal Temples, and the beautiful Pura Maospahit, which is believed to date back to the 14th century.
