Tourist attractions
At the top of most visitors’ lists of places to see is the iconic Red Fort. This vivid red sandstone fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (who also built the Taj Mahal) as his palace in 1648. Surrounded by beautifully lush, green gardens, it’s still a magnificent sight today.
Sitting between the Fort and the main gate is Chatta Chowk or the Covered Bazaar, where you can buy a wide selection of souvenirs, trinkets and jewellery. Also make time to visit the Diwan-i-Khas, (Hall of Private Audience). A beautiful building constructed entirely out of marble, it is where the emperor received special visitors.
Humayun's Tomb in south Delhi, near Hazrat Nizamuddin station, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and a truly spectacular building. It is surrounded by immaculate gardens in the Persian Char Bagh (four corners) style.
Dating back even further is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Qutub complex in Mehrauli, which dates from the Slave Dynasty of 1206 to 1290. It’s a complex of beautiful buildings including the Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and the intricately carved Tomb of Iltutmish.

Transportation and parking
Buses do run to the airport, but they tend to be crowded and sporadic. The easiest way to get from the centre of the city to the airport is to pre-book a taxi. You can ask your reception or concierge service to arrange this for you at your hotel. Limousine services are also available. It is not advisable to hail a taxi from the roadside, as unlicensed taxis may overcharge you for the journey.
Parking at the airport is very restricted, with only 200 short-term spaces available. So it may be wise to arrange storage or parking at an alternative location and then travel to the airport by taxi.
Arriving at the airport
Passengers flying from Al Najaf with Qatar Airways depart from the main terminal Departures area. The airport has seven check-in desks, four gates and 10 aircraft stands, so finding your boarding point should be relatively easy.
Be aware that security at the airport is exceptionally tight, and document and luggage checks are thorough. Allow around two hours before your flight is due to board to check in and clear customs and security checks.
