Guangzhou is situated to the north of Hong Kong and overlooks the slow-moving waters of the Pearl River. Its attractive location, and the many avant-garde buildings which have made the city famous in recent years, draw visitors in all year round. The Guangdong Folk Arts Museum is particularly popular, housed in the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall Complex and home to an impressive collection of artefacts from the surrounding region. Guangdong Museum is another must-see, and you can get good views across the city from the top of the Canton TV Tower.

Arriving in Guangzhou

Formerly known as Canton, Guangzhou is the third largest city in China and a major cultural and commercial centre for this growing economy. For over two millennia this hugely important city has been at the centre of trading in the region, and today is just as important on the global stage.

Book a flight to Guangzhou with Qatar Airways and you’ll discover a forward-focused city that still maintains its traditional values of courtesy, hard work and honour.

Surrounded by magnificent mountain ranges, its relatively remote location means that this remarkable city has developed a unique sense of identity and a very individual character. Its values are perhaps a little less conservative than other parts of China, and even its cuisine is distinctive, making it a fascinating destination for both business and leisure travellers.

Tourist attractions

One of the main landmarks in the city is Xiguan Residence, a perfectly preserved example of traditional Cantonese architectures from the late Qing Dynasty, and one home to the upper class residents of the city.

For a moment’s peace and tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of the main shopping area, rest a while in the stunning Yuexiu Park, the largest urban park in China with acres of beautifully manicured borders and wide open spaces.

In fact, this huge city is full of gardens and parks, including Yuntai Garden, situated at the base of Cloud Mountain and famous for its selection of rare plants and flowers.

The city is full of museums (note that most museums are closed on Mondays). One of the most important archaeological finds in China is the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King, with its thousands of jade tiles, while at the foot of Bayiun Mountain is the Guangzhou Sculpture Park, which displays work by some of the region’s best sculptors.

Flying from Tehran

Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport is a shining example of modernism combined with traditional values of service and courtesy. This busy air hub is located approximately 30km south of the capital, and is currently undergoing substantial re-development. Plans for a new airport hotel are underway, as well as an extension of the Tehran metro service to the main terminal. Passengers flying from Tehran with Qatar Airways will find the staff friendly and helpful, and the well-laid out terminal building easy to navigate.

Transportation and parking

Transport to and from the airport is primarily provided by taxis and hire cars. Taxi journey time to the airport is around 90 minutes, depending on traffic. Shuttle buses link the airport to the nearest metro station and with Tehran’s domestic airport, Mehrabad International Airport. If you’re driving to the airport, follow the Tehran-Qom Freeway (Route 7), which links to the airport via a separate access road. Short-term parking is available next to the terminal building. Long-term car parks (2 and 3) are a little further out, but there is a regular free shuttle bus service running to the terminal.

Arriving at Tehran

Passengers flying from Tehran with Qatar Airways depart from Terminal 1 A and B zones. A comfortable lounge area is available for first class and business class travellers, which offers snacks and drinks as well as relaxation areas.

Facilities and amenities

Imam Khomeini International Airport has a good selection of facilities and amenities. Although there are no business facilities or meeting rooms available on-site, there are plenty of conference facilities in nearby hotels. Banks and currency exchange facilities are available (note that credit cards are not widely accepted in Iran) and free Wi-Fi is available in the Departure lounge.
