Shanghai is China’s biggest city, with a stunning coastal location and a cosmopolitan population. As a hub for global finance, the city is dominated by soaring office blocks, but there is also much cultural heritage to enjoy here too. The colonial buildings on the Bund waterfront promenade provide an insight into the city’s beginnings, while the Shanghai and Oriental Pearl Towers symbolise the brash new metropolis that’s busy making its mark on the region.

Flying from Buenos Aires

Ministro Pistarini International Airport is Argentina’s largest international airport and is located just 22 kilometres southwest of Buenos Aires. The airport was voted "Best airport in the region" by Skytrax in 2007, and its friendly, professional staff go out of their way to make the start of your journey enjoyable and stress-free. Passengers flying from Buenos Aires with Qatar Airways will find this to be an interesting, efficient and modern starting point to their journey.

Transportation and parking

Buses are the most cost-effective way to travel to the airport from all areas of Buenos Aires. The 394 runs to and from Monte Grande railway station and Camino de Cintura, while the 502 serves Ezeiza. A total of eight routes operate between the airport and the Plaza de Mayo in central Buenos Aires. A dedicated shuttle service runs between downtown and the airport, taking approximately one hour to complete the journey. Plenty of taxis are around and can be used, however, if you are using a taxi then ensure it is pre-arranged and the price is agreed before you set off. Parking at the airport is good, with a multi-storey indoor car park next to Terminal B and an open-air car park next to Terminal A.

Arriving at the airport

Passengers flying from Buenos Aires with Qatar Airways depart from Terminal A. Ensure you arrive at the correct terminal, as the site is huge and it can take some time to travel between terminals. As with all international airports, security is very tight so allow at least two hours before your flight is due to board to check in and clear customs checks.

Facilities and amenities

Terminal A is the main international terminal, and provides good facilities for travellers, including a fully equipped business centre that offers full photocopying, fax and Wi-Fi services, as well as relaxation rooms. A bank offering 24-hour services is also available, and there are multiple ATMs throughout the airport. Food and drink is provided at a number of outlets, with both authentic Argentinian and international cuisine on offer, as well as the usual fast food outlets, snacks and beverages. A large retail area sells luxury goods and travel essentials, and the entire airport is wheelchair accessible.

Arriving in Shanghai

There’s one word that describes Shanghai – huge. Home to more than 23million people, this vast city is the largest in mainland China and one of the world’s most prosperous metropolitan areas, making it a magnet for business travellers, investors and entrepreneurs. The sheer scale of Shanghai can leave you breathless, but if you plan your journey carefully before you arrive you will be able to see some of the most incredible juxtapositions between ancient and modern culture anywhere in the world.

Book a flight to Shanghai with Qatar Airways and you’ll receive the warmest of welcomes from people who embrace visitors from all over the world (Shanghai is home to more than 9 million immigrants).

Tourist attractions

Shanghai is split into two districts by the Huangpu River - Puxi and Pudong. Puxi is the older of the two, with the majority of modern Shanghai (including the business district) housed in Pudong. To escape the frenetic pace of life of the city head for the beautifully manicured Yuyuan Gardens, which is dotted with classical architecture (although you may have to struggle through the street vendors at the gates). The Bund and the French Concession transports you back to 1920s Shanghai, while modern architecture is well represented in and around Pudong's Lujiazui District.

One of the more unusual attractions is Zhujiajiao Water Town, a classic ‘water village’ that’s over 400 years old and with a signature five-arch bridge spanning the Cao Gang River. It’s a maze of paths and bridges, and is also home to two impressive temples.

Other temples throughout the city that are well worth adding to your itinerary include the Jade Buddha Temple, Jing'an Temple, Chenghuang and Longhua Temple. To catch a truly breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city head up to the observation point on the Oriental Pearl Tower. To learn more about the history and culture of Shanghai dating back to the Bronze Age, pay a visit to the well-run Shanghai Museum.

Travel Considerations

Flights to Shanghai with Qatar Airways land at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Before you fly to Shanghai please check the visa and passport requirements.
