Shanghai is not only one of the biggest cities in China but is also one of the most exciting and colourful, with plenty of fascinating visitor attractions. The famous Bund promenade lies at its heart, dating from colonial times and lined with grand old mansions. The Pudong district, just across the river, is the economic powerhouse for the city and is dominated by the Shanghai Tower and the equally impressive Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Be sure to also visit the Yu Garden, famous for its pavilions and towers, which echo an older, more traditional Shanghai.

Flying from Lagos

The Nigerian capital of Lagos is one of the busiest air transportation points in Africa, and Murtala Muhammed International Airport has developed in the last few years into an efficient departure point. Passengers flying from Lagos with Qatar Airways will find this a friendly and welcoming airport, where staff greet you with a smile and are more than happy to make the start of your journey a pleasant one.

Parking and transportation

The easiest way to travel between Lagos and the airport is by taxi. These are plentiful and quite cheap. Some hotels in Lagos will also arrange pre-booked limousines on order. Some buses run to both the international and the domestic terminal, but it is important to check that you are on the right bus, as the two terminals are a mile apart and there is no shuttle between them. Limited car parking (750 short-term spaces) is available.

Arriving at Lagos

Passengers flying from Lagos with Qatar Airways depart from the international terminal. There are executive and VIP lounges available for business class and first class passengers.

Facilities and amenities

Murtala Muhammed International Airport has a good selection of amenities for travellers. Wi-Fi is available in the executive and VIP lounges, and there is a meet and greet lounge, prayer rooms for devotions, and access for less able-bodied passengers. A choice of retail outlets sell both locally produced Nigerian goods and products such as jewellery, electrical goods and perfume, as well as a duty free area for ticket holders who have cleared customs. On-the-go snacks, coffee and light refreshments are served in the lounges and from food outlets around the terminal, and by vendors in the food court. ATMs and currency exchange services are also available.

Arriving in Shanghai

There’s one word that describes Shanghai – huge. Home to more than 23million people, this vast city is the largest in mainland China and one of the world’s most prosperous metropolitan areas, making it a magnet for business travellers, investors and entrepreneurs. The sheer scale of Shanghai can leave you breathless, but if you plan your journey carefully before you arrive you will be able to see some of the most incredible juxtapositions between ancient and modern culture anywhere in the world.

Book a flight to Shanghai with Qatar Airways and you’ll receive the warmest of welcomes from people who embrace visitors from all over the world (Shanghai is home to more than 9 million immigrants).

Tourist attractions

Shanghai is split into two districts by the Huangpu River - Puxi and Pudong. Puxi is the older of the two, with the majority of modern Shanghai (including the business district) housed in Pudong. To escape the frenetic pace of life of the city head for the beautifully manicured Yuyuan Gardens, which is dotted with classical architecture (although you may have to struggle through the street vendors at the gates). The Bund and the French Concession transports you back to 1920s Shanghai, while modern architecture is well represented in and around Pudong's Lujiazui District.

One of the more unusual attractions is Zhujiajiao Water Town, a classic ‘water village’ that’s over 400 years old and with a signature five-arch bridge spanning the Cao Gang River. It’s a maze of paths and bridges, and is also home to two impressive temples.

Other temples throughout the city that are well worth adding to your itinerary include the Jade Buddha Temple, Jing'an Temple, Chenghuang and Longhua Temple. To catch a truly breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city head up to the observation point on the Oriental Pearl Tower. To learn more about the history and culture of Shanghai dating back to the Bronze Age, pay a visit to the well-run Shanghai Museum.

Travel Considerations

Flights to Shanghai with Qatar Airways land at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Before you fly to Shanghai please check the visa and passport requirements.
